A/C compressor sounds like someone dropped a handful of marbles in a garbage disposal. Local shop wants $1200 for compressor (new), orifice tubes, accumulator/dryer and labor. Specialty Auto A/C shop wants $1800 for all of the above and condenser. Are these typical prices and does anyone know a good A/C shop in Atlanta?

Thanks for any info.

You can get all those parts on eBay for under $300 shipped. I have a new pressure line/ accumulator/ drier/ orifice assy that I got off of eBay for like $39 shipped. Compressors usually go for around $200.

You can readily get all the AC parts on ebay or any autoparts store relatively inexpensively. Becareful on rebuilt compressors, the quality can greatly vary. I installed a rebuilt compressor, couldn't stand the output of it and swapped in a brand new Ford unit and love it.

The 1.2k quote is accurate, they **** you on price mark up and labor. The system really isn't that hard to work on yourself.

My compressor went out a about 2 years ago in my SHO. At that point, I just had the whole system switched over to R-134a. The compressor was rebuilt, it works great. I think I paid about $250 for the rebuilt compressor. If you don't want to take the chance, go for a new one.

Thanks for the advice.

Assuming I bought the parts and replaced them; are there any special tools required? Also, I don't have the ability to evacuate the system and then fill it with refrigerant. Would a shop be willing to do that for me even though they did not do the repair?

That is exactly what I did. Had a shop evac my system, I replaced the compressor, accumulator, orfice tube, and had the shop clean the condenser. Then had them vacuum them out and recharge it. You just need a $10 tool set made for the AC connections, they are the same connection that the fuel line uses when it connects to the fuel rail. You can buy the set at Kragen, autozone......

Anyone,

Where is the orifice tube? I know it should be in the hi-press line near the evaporator, but am having trouble locating it in my 91 SHO.

Did you flush the system before taking it to the shop for evac/charge?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Dale, have you found a source for the rebuild kit for the Nippondenso 10-P-15-F? I have seen kits for the 13, 17, and some of the 15 series compressors, but NOT for the 15 F, ie the SHO compressor.
