I bought a 99 from Oklahoma City and drove it back to Omaha NE with no problems. No noises, shifted nice and smooth and everything worked. Unfortunately I have had to park it outside the last few days because my garage is being used for ripping apart a 91 SHO parts car.

It has been cold in the morning and my car is making a funny sound which disturbs me. It goes away when it warms up, but it is a high pitch whining sound. That is loudest over by the intake.

Here is a movie of it to hear the sound. It was dark in the morning so the picture is bad and the sound seems worse on the recording than it actually is.

What could that be and should I be alarmed ?
And what is all that clicking in the engine about ?
a V8 is a new beast I have a lot to learn about!

It runs fine and definitely has all the power it should even with the whine

I don't hear any sound....

the clicking is most likely the injectors firing, they tend to me noisy

Oh - I should have been more clear. The clicking is not on the video. Just the whine. The clicking is not continual, just sometimes in speeding up or slowing down something will click in the engine. My older SHOs don't make any sound like that.

The click was just a throw in question. It sounds normal, but i don't know what is happening mechanically when it does that.

Do you use Firefox ? I could not hear it on that browser. It isn't reading the avi correctly. Try right clicking to "save as" and open it in Windows Media Player.

Or am I on crack and there is no sound ? I hear it OK. Or could that just be Gen 3 paranoia ? LOL .

I just heard that video and I was cringing.... *shuddering* I dunno where that noise could be coming from but it sounds nuts. Maybe the trans pump... is the fluid clean? I really have no idea without really looking at it and poking around a bit. As far as the clicking... I've noticed that the injectors do tick quite a bit on my car too.

Check the lower splash shield for ATF or PS fluid. Check your PS and ATF levels. It's probably one or the other.

Edit- Just watched the vid and that sure sounds like the trans pump. Could be just due to low fluid level though. That's also the area of the water pump but these water pumps don't fail.

I go out this morning to start it and it purred like a kitten - no extra noise. It was a bit warmer today. I have checked the fluid levels and there is no evidence of anything leaking anywhere. It's a mystery. Someone at work suggested that the computer was adjusting to the climate difference or higher altitude which sounds good, but I don't know how true that would be.

Cam weld getting scheduled for next weekend so I can have a pro take a listen for me also.

Wow that sounds horrible!

My alternator used to whine horribly before it was replaced, but nothing like that!

hey whats up bdcmaverick i'm in lincoln
YEA when its colder out they seem to make more noise but mine has made no noise that terrible. I get the fuel injector noise often if its cold or the car sat over the weekend. Also when it's really cold the steering is a little stiff although its fluid is topped off. Just until i make a turn or two and then its back to normal. Just a couple quirks about owning a sho.

But yea like everyone else said check the transmission, and for leaks too
And please get your cams welded if they aren't already!

check out www.bdcclan.com to see where my name comes from. BDC is a UT gaming clan. Maverick was the mascott at my college and also a favorite comic book character. Just grew into my silly internet handle :bonk:

Update - I took in into a transmission shop for a Free Inspection and of course they told me I needed a whole new tranny. I was born at night but not last night ;) So it was suggested I get it flushed and a new filter and damned if that didn't fix the problem. It shifts stronger into 2nd and makes no noise at all. I never would have thought that would do it but it did.

I just wish I could change the oil in my 91 and make the engine all better.

Definitely looking for a new 3.0 MTX engine if anyone has referrals or offers.

Water pump or belt that drives the water pump. The small one by the throttle body.
Remove the front plastic cover remove the small belt and fire the engine up for about 10 seconds and see if the sound is gone.
