Did the 96 brake upgrade on a friend’s 93 SHO yesterday. Here’s the run down in parts and cost.

Knuckles, hubs & calipers from 94 Sable w/ABS $100
New 95 Continental Calipers (used the ones from the Sable as cores) $75
New 95 Continental Rotors $100
New 94 Sable Bearings $90
New 95 Continental Caliper Brackets (could find any used) $85
New 93 SHO brake hoses $30
New Raybestos Semi-metallic Pads $40

Total $520

Took 4 hours. If you have a pre-94 SHO (especially with high miles) and the brakes are shot and you’re gonna replace rotors, pads, calipers and hoses anyway (and probably wheel bearings), definitely consider this upgrade for $200 more. Obviously, if you have a 94-95, you already have the knuckles so it’s a no brainer.

Good info to have. This will save a lot of questions in the future. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

How bout some part numbers and the places where you bought the new parts. I may need new brakes before long and this looks like my answer. I don't want to stick with the current setup becaues my breaks are less than a year old and warped.

All the new parts, except the caliper brackets, can be bought at any AdvancedAuto, AutoZone, PepBoys or CarQuest. You don't need part #s, just give them the above list. The caliper brackets you'll have to get from Ford.

When you get the knuckles from the boneyard, tell them you want everything - knuckles, hubs, rotors, calipers and brackets still assembled. You'll use the calipers as cores since you can't use the ones off your SHO because they are not the same (some stores are more picky than others). You'll throw away the rotors and brackets, but keep the 4 bolts on the brackets and the brake hose bolt on the caliper.

Jeremy: I did mine and since yours is a 93 all you'll need is new 96SHO Caliper brackets and 96 SHO pads and 96 SHO rotors. The calipers are the same so your set.
Cheap.

I don't believe the 93 calipers are the same as the 94....

Also on the cores...as long as you take them back later and not when you buy the new ones you are set....I've done that for people many times... :-D

I just ordered the 96 upgrade for my 94 MTX. it came to like $220 through SHOnut performance. check them out. All you needed was the rotors and caliper brackets.

Ryan,

Chances are, I will come to you for the brake parts. I think my breaks are going to need some attention this summer.

As far as shonut goes, I have a '93. Need more options. This sounds like a pretty good idea. I also have to get my abs working. Right now I have no abs because I don't have any sensors on the rear.

If you have a 94 or 95, the minimum you need is rotors and brackets. You can re-use everything else so it's a cheap upgrade. You can buy rotors locally for $100 and brackets from Ford for $85 and save the shipping. Not anything against SHONUT - I've had great experience buying from him.

The pre-93 applications are when you have to round up lots of parts.

Just did the 96 brake upgrade on my 94 ATX and it was like $70 for the new mounting brakets, $32.99 each rotor, and $35.99 for the ford pads, came to like $175 or so.

For a few hundred more you can upgrade to the 13in Baer system. Get the spindles and the Baer's are like $600-700 (can't remember).

If you have the 94-5, then the 96 is so cheap it is hard to justify the expense of the Baer's.

It is quite easy, consider weight. If I had the cash I wouldn't even bother with the 96 or the Bear kit. I would go directly to the Wildwood setup. $1300 to $1500 on breaks is quite a piece of change. Depending on what i do with my SHO will decide what brakes I do next. My rotors are warping and they were replaced less than a year ago. I would rather drop ~$500 on a brake upgrade than a ~$150 on smaller stock '93 rotors and pads.

Here's a stupid question:

I thought the 96 upgrade required the rotors, brackets, pads and calipers from a '96, spindles from a 94/95 (or compatible spindles), etc?

IMO Baer / Wilwood is a waste UNLESS you Auto - X a **** of a lot....my 96 upgrade on the 93 was well worth the cash, and the best mod...yet I paid FPS to do mine..wanted it done right...and wish I would have done it after seeing hwo easy it is.

That's only if you have an 89-93 taurus. If yours is a 94-95, you only need the rotors and caliper brackets from a 96. The calipers and pads are interchangeable between the 94-95's and the 96-99's. They look different but still fit.

Well, I hardly ever Auto-x, but the one I did I only had stock brakes, maybe the 96 uprgade, and they were more than enough. Now to take it to a full road course, where speed are above 100, and my 96 upgrade was NOT enough. That is why I have the Baer's.

And that was my point...for the Average SHO guy the 96 is sufficent.
