Hi,

I just got my car safety inspected; it passed but they suggested I have my lower control arm bushings replaced. Should I also replace the lower control arm while I'm doing the work? What about the upper? Are those likely to break any time soon? (140xxx miles on the car).

Thanks!

It's much easier to replace the entire lower control arm. It'll come with a new ball joint and new bushings already installed.

There's no upper control arms.

Ah ha! So that's why RockAuto doesn't carry them... Is that just for the SHO, or all Taurus? Or all Fords? Interesting...

Thanks!

All the Taurus models have the same suspension design. The only major variant would be spring rate and struts to handle the springs.

If it passed inspection, I would not worry about it for awhile. The inspection people are very conservative and will not pass anything close to being bad. They are not going to "break", but it will eventually affect your tire wear.
Happy motoring.

Then yes, replace the whole control arm. There are strut rod bushings at the front of the subframe that some replace as well, but if they look like they are in decent shape, I would leave them alone.
