Like the title says, I have a 94 ATX with 170,000 miles on it. I've only owned it for 6,000 miles and as far as I know, the transmission is the original. My question is, how long does the transmission last in these cars? Am I lucky it lasted this long? The only issue I have with it is every so often when I slow down, turn the corner, and then accelerate, it doesn't seem to down shift right away and when it finally does, my front tires chirp, and I'm on my way. What do you think? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Chances are it's been rebuilt or replaced already. If not, then you're extremely lucky. Mine lasted to 117,*** and at that point all I had left was 1st and reverse.

I would start planning a rebuild in the future, if you plan on keeping her. For now I would make sure you change the fluid and keep that up to date. As far as how long they last is up to how the car is driven and maintained. They generally make it to 100k-120k from what I've seen and keep in mind most of these cars have been driven hard. My ex still has her SHO '95 ATX with 160k on the original tranny(she's the orig. owner) granted the car is meticuously maintained and rarely see's 5000 rpm's or more.

Side note- Are you the one with the black srt-4 running 11 sec 1/4 miles around here?

I had the fluid changed out as soon as I got the car. Is a rebuild something that I can do myself? This is my first automatic, so I've never worked on an auto transmission before, but I'm more than capable of learning how. What is generally replaced during a rebuild? Is it cheaper and easier to just buy a rebuilt trans and stick it in there? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure out what I should do. I really want to hang on to this car. Thank you.

Nope, mine only runs high 12s. Someday it'll be a fast car. :)
