Hello all, this is definitely a first for me. This car has 150K on the clock, I put a 60K trans in it about 8k miles ago. It has been fine, no signs of problems besides the sluggish ford tranny.. I went today to gvet some summit turbo muffs put on. I pulled out of the place, drove for about 1/4 mile, and it was like I put it in neutral. NOTHING, no reverse, no drive, nada... I know PART of the car knows it is supposed to be in gear, because the idle raises slightly, and the rev limiter is not at 4K while in the gears. Is this a torque conv. or trans. pump, or something more drastic? I love the car, and the summits sound pretty nice, but theyd sound nicer if they were moving!!!! Thanks so much to all in advance for posting... I want my MTX back..

AHH no help/answers? what good are ya? JK, the summits sounded pretty nice, but I only got to hear them for about 1/4 mile. Didnt hear from outside, but for the most part, it sounded a bit better than stock... Not sure on part # or model #, but they were the #'s from a post about them in another thread..
Installation was $75 for welding on the muffs, as well as bending a new section from the pipe in back, because the aftermarket system from before would not allot him to use the offset muffler as specified from the factory.. I had him put a seciton of aluminized pipe on there instead of tips, as I dont have the $$ for tips...
Good Luck!

/\ BUMP... I have been told its hopefully a trans pump, isnt there SOMEONE in here who has had this happen to them? The trans in the car only has approx 68K on it, I put a 60K trans in it last year... Please help!!! My car is pathetic right now, and sitting at the muffler shop!

I had the "Exact" same problem happen in my 93 3.2L (ATX) SHO... One day--> I was attempting to get on the highway from an onramp, and when I gave her some juice she just sat there revvin' up a storm but couldn't get out of it's own way!! I was like "What the ****??". Then it did the same thing while attempting to climb an incline on a back road the next day. Shortly after that it began to buck and slam once in a while, and then after a little more time "Slip frequently." The ending result was a complete rebuild by AAMCO transmission. They said the inner gears were "Shot", and a rebuild was the only remedy. It cost me $2200 eek! I am not trying to scare you, or anything like that... I just wanted to let you know what happened to my SHO. Good luck with yours, and keep us posted as to what is happening with your tranny :D

BlackOnBlackATX:
possibly your torque converter. the same thing happened in my chevy, was my trans pump. lets hope its as simple.
I second that....my father's 94 lincoln has a similar transmission, and when the pump blew, the car went into neutral and that was it....

easy, fairly cheap fix...

the trans pump itself only cost me $20, the chevy dealership ended up charging me around 350 in the end for parts and labor since the trans had to come out to put it in. not too bad. but i would definately take it to someone, unless youre well versed in transmissions yourself that is. i would personally not attempt to repair my own. please let us know what they say though. if youre tranny was put in 6k ago do you have some kind of warantee?

I pulled into my driveway one night at an idle. Car felt like someone slipped it into neutral. No amount of coaxing could get it to move in any gear. Had it towed to the Ford store. Found the shaft had stripped the splines out of the pump. Did a complete re-build on the trans even though it looked fine inside.
Good luck

Thanks to all for the posts... Im going to get it to someone soon, but this car is more or less a 2nd car, being it has 155K on it, and I am always moving things with my truck. (96 Rodeo), so my rodeo will have to be fixed first. That, coincidentally, lost the input shaft/bearing from what I have been told, because I was driving on the highway, and same thing, it was like it went into neutral. I lost EVERYTHING but 4th gear. SO, Ive been looking for a trans for that, or a guy to fix it, and still have yet to find a good trans guy. Anybody from MA who does trans reasonably?
Thanks to all, and once repaired, I will let you know what it was/is!

There IS fluid in it right? I'd disconnect one the the tranny cooler lines and run the engine to check for any type of pressure. Were there any driveability issues? It's hard to fathom a catastrophic failure so suddenly.

Yep, it was almost full of fluid, down about a quart but borderline within the hashmarks... NO problems prior to that as far as driving it... I have not yet removed a line to check line pressure, as it is parked in a lot where the exhaust was fixed, and would rather not spray fluid everywhere...

Disconnect the hose on the secondary cooler on the input side (closest to radiator hookup) and plug the cooler inlet. I'd use a milk jug and have a friend start the car. No fluid spill.
