I have a 93 ATX, white with white slicers and Yokohama's with 1k miles on them. Mechanic tells me engine needs to be rebuilt because of "rod problem". But he doesn't want to rebuild it, just replace it. I have spent over $2,000 in repairs in the last year including; new water pump, alternator, battery, pulley, belt, tune up, tranny flush, car alarm. Everything on the car works great, A/C blows cold, no problems with tranny. There is a loud knocking when car is started which the mechanic blamed on a "rod problem". I have receipts for the work, alarm and tires. So the asking price is $2,000 but I will consider all reasonable offers or possible trade.

Before you sell it find a SHO mechanic that knows about a SHO engine. It may just need rod bearings replaced. There are very few mechanics around that know anything about a SHO engine.

All the parts for a rod bearing job is no more than $100.

Easy fix, if that's where the knocking is coming from. And it can be done within a few hours with the motor in the car.

That sounds great, but in two years I have not found a mechanic in San Antonio that really knows anything about the SHO engine. So I am left with a "Ford master mechanic" that only wants to replace the engine. He says that Ford doesn't make parts for the SHO engine anymore so my only choce is to replace the motor. I found one place that used to work on SHO's but now only does bodywork. I am afraid of damaging the engine so I have not driven it since the knocking started. It is getting expensive having it towed from shop to shop. So I am stuck. I would rather keep the car but without a good mechanic I am looking at a $5,000 bill according to the 2 yahoos I have already taken the car to. So if anyone knows a mechanic in San Antonio that knows SHO's PLEASE let me know. If not I will be forced to put an ad in the paper selling the car.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Just call around for quotes on having the rod bearings changed. $2000 is simply to much for a SHO with bad bearings.

For sure, a good SHO mechanic is hard to find. In San Antonio, in general, I have had great luck with Kermit O'Neal at Alamo Sports Car. He is located at 3111 Broadway and the phone number is 210 828 5511. Kermit and his folks have worked on my '68 Datsun Roadster and my modified '66 Mustang - both of which required innovative attention. As for my SHO, he did the suspension work but has not been inside the engine. He is honest and if he can't fix whatever is wrong, he will tell you. He is not a certified SVT (or SVO) mechanic but he does build Cobras - the AC kind. He is a race car builder, driver, and all around good guy. The only other place I have taken my SHO in San Antonio is Northside Ford and that was for routine stuff and even then, they could never find the short that is constantly draining my battery. If you like, I can call Kermit to see if he is comfortable taking on your SHO. Hope this helps.

Noahsmom, I just spoke with Kermit at Alamo Sports Car. He has been inside a SHO engine before in addition to doing suspension work. He would be glad to look and listen. I told him you would be calling him to make an appointment. Wait til you see the cars he has there! The name and number are in my previous post. Let me know how it goes. Good luck. Richard

Richard,
Talked to Kermit and he said the same thing that eveyone else has been telling me. He says that I should just buy a new engine and the total cost to me for engine and installation would run $4-5,000. That is too much money so I am probably going to hold on to the car until I can sell it or ge the money to fix it. Thanks for your help.

I thought I sent this thread to the black hole, since classified adds must be paid for and put in the appropriate forum.??

Anyhow, Jennifer, there has been more than one San Antonio SHO owner that has brought their SHO to Sergio in Houston to have repairs and maintaince performed. I hate for that to be my only advice to you, but letting someone who doesn't know what they are doing work on a SHO is a very bad idea, especially on the major stuff like an engine. I have a perfectly running 95 ATX that I can't sell for 2,900 so I don't expect you to get many offers on yours.
Good luck
-Martin
