Good deal how y'all doing.
I'd tell you how I'm doing but I ain't imnotsureyet. Anyways I just got word that it's going to cost me anther $3680.00 to get my car fixed guy at the shop said I need a new transmission and clutch. Has anyone had any experience in a matter of such as this that may get some light on this matter. I mean I don't know this guy so I don't think I can just go for it Intel I run it through here to see what anyone has to offer in advice started just professional clutch and now we're ready for replacing the whole transmission this is being done at aamco but I don't know this guy and I can't see what's going on down there and I'm in Big Bear California and he's in Redlands.
I thank you trust people that are late and found that that's a dangerous way to be and costly is anybody else had problems in this area not trust issues but the transmission sure would like some input on how much should it cost for a new transmission in 92 s h o how much do these guys make for labor. Anybody got a good transmission that I can depend on this guy says he's got a low mileage one how trustworthy does that sound to you I'm not inclined to be all that trusting at this time I'd rather know that I got my transmission from somebody belonging to this form. I'd be more inclined just somebody in this form as I've had nothing but good come from this form in the past wish I could say that was case with the rest of my dealings
Yep if you can if not that's cool you better get good numbers on tranny 5 speed with a SHO 92 2nd gen also looking for front right fender turn indicator right or assembly can't seem to find one in and out of the store imagine mine.

Thank you all from

That price looks to be 2 to 3 times higher than it should, unless you are getting a tranny with all brand new internals as well as a really expensive clutch. Here is what Shosource charges for a replacement tranny, so with shipping it would be around $1000. You could probably find a cheaper one, but it would not have been gone through. You can get a stock clutch for around $250 or less. Labor depends on where you go, but I would recommend going to someone who works on these cars. Nick Chrimes (BaySHO Performance) is in the Bay area. Why does the guy at the shop think you need both a clutch and tranny?

Get your car and take it to someone else. Get it out of that shop. They are going to rip you off. These transmissions are obsolete. There are no new parts out there to be bought other than possibly going thru SHOSource. How are they planning to get you a new transmission? The only option they would have is the same one that you have - Buy a good used one from SHOSource or another member in the community.

As suggested above, take it to Nick Chrimes and let him give you a true diagnosis.

Agree above. Contact SHosource for a used unit I would also contact Dan Barbush for a used unit although I'm not sure if he's keen on shipping one. His prices are usually very good.

Get another flatbed truck and get you car out of that transmission shop. Even if you end up towing it home again.
Snoop around on this forum for members near you (there is a registry of members). You will be able to get local advice from them
Don't buy another transmission, as I doubt if you need one.
The Nick Chrimes option is a good one, depending on how far you are from his location. If it is a long ways, consider renting / borrowing a half ton with a hitch and rent a U-Haul car mover (where you strap the front wheels to a 2 wheel tow apparatus).

The shop where you have it now is not capable of working on your vehicle, and they want to save face by quoting you an astronomical estimate, so that you will go away.

Good luck and use this forum to get the information that you need, as it is all right here.

Nick built my 89 for my late father and I can vouch for the quality and value of his work - my car runs like a top 5+ years later. I see that you are about 7 hours from San Jose, if it is feasible for you to tow the car up there it might be worth contacting him. Also remember, if you rent a car trailer and they ask you what kind of car you are towing, tell them "mazda miata".

Just a clutch job generally runs $1,000. Used trans are what you get them for, but SHO Source is great.

I appreciate the plugs, guys. Yes, the AAMCO price is to dissuade you from having them do the work as they don't want to unless you are willing to pay their exorbitant price.

First up Imnotsureyet, what were your symptoms? Not sure at this point if the transmission needs replacing.

As has been said, a replacement transmission will run you about $1,000 from SHO Source.

For the clutch, either:

Clutch (Sachs / Power Torque) K0122-01 $263 O'Reilly

or, with 120 thou reinforcement straps and HD rivets as opposed to the Sachs 80 thou, the Clutchmasters Stage 1 kit from SHO Source (around $550). An option is a Ceramic TOB to reduce finger wear. SHO Source doesn't currently list them, but they can still be had from http://www.shonutperformance.com/ for around $130.

Add to that flywheel resurface ($40), and axle seals and rear main seal ($50), and the total parts price should be around $1,300 to $1,800.

Book hours for the above is 9.0 hours. They of course were established on a brand new car. Mechanics routinely pad those hours by as much as 50%, or more if there's going to be a learning curve involved. I keep to book hours, although add a little for parts cleanup.

My rate is $80 per hour ($720). Someone like AAMCO might charge around $120 which brings their padded labor cost to around $1,600. Total in excess of $3,000, so their $3,680 isn't that far off the mark.

I am in San Jose, which is around 6 1/2 hours from the Redlands AAMCO. However, Matt Wheeler is only half an hour away in Rancho Cucamonga. Matt goes back a long way. He used to work for SHO Source. I've given him a heads up on this thread. Not sure if he's willing to do the work.

Thanks for the plug, Evan. I spent 10 months in 2014 restoring and upgrading the car after it had been sitting outside for 12 years with a bad clutch, turning it from this:

into this:IMG 1137 1024x683

Thank you for your advice. I believe your right and I will be reaching out to members for my info and parts. As I feel like you and have had very good experiences with everyone I've made contact with on this form so thank you and all the folks who make this from what it is. I hope to do my part to pass along the traditions and assistance to others as they have been given so freely to me just as soon as I can gane the knowledge and ability to do so at this time I just don't possess those qualities that I will work toward it and pass it along or should I say play it forward

Is the transmission actually toast? Gears jammed? Differential pin come loose and shoot a hole in the tranny case?

Or is it that it's difficult to engage gears because the clutch is too worn to fully disengage? We need a detailed description of what's going on with the car.
