Hey guys this is my first post on this forum. I am about to pick up a 1991 SHO with a bad motor in it.

I was curious if any one has any tips on changing the motor out? I heard it can be a pain but I thought I would get everyones opinions here.

Thanks

Take a lot of photos before you start. And I mean alot.
The in and out of the motor is not the hard part. The reconnection of everything is where the problems arise.
Pull the motor out of the parts car first and take a million pictures of that too.
Be prepared to change all your subframe bushings, motor mounts, tranny mounts and exhaust studs. Take the donor car to an exhaust shop and have them back off the Y-pipe nuts to save yourself some grief.

I've never taken one out from the top - though I've seen that people on this forum have done it. I took mine out from the bottom. What I did is take off the intake manifold for more clearance. Then I lowered the car down (with the wheels off) onto two furniture dollys - wich were placed under the subframe. after unbolting the strut mounts from the top - 3 little bolts on each side, I unbolted the subframe bolts (4 of those). I used an engine hoist to lift the front of the car higher than the engine - then placed the front of the car on 2 jackstands extended to their maximum. Move the engine hoist out of the way. Then I used my blazer with a tow rope and dragged the whole assebly out from under the car. These tips are obviously leaving out what to disconnect as the list is a long one. Like the above poster said TAKE ALOT OF PICTURES. What I usually do during a removal and installation is put a piece of masking tape on every harness I disconnect and label it with numbers starting at with the number 1. Then I put a matching number on the harness that it was supposed to plug into. That way you know where everything should connect.

Ya I just got done pulling it out. It took me and my brother about 5 hours to get it done. I didn't think it was that bad for a first time. Man that motor was stuffed in that car. We did end up coming right out the top. And there was a ton of connections. Hopefully next weekend I'll be putting it back.
