Can I just replace the rear deck 6x9s with 8" kickers as use factory amp? All I want is a tiny bit more thump!

Thank you all!

From what I understand (as I am going through an extensive audio build myself at the moment) those 6x9's are considered (& more importantly powered with) the sub signal from the factory amps.

I'll be the 1st to admit, I'm no expert by any stretch on audio stuff, which is why I've hired the local vendor I have, to complete the work on mine, but they've been explaining various things to me, throughout, as the project unfolds.

But yes, you would be able to perform a swap as you're proposing and gain some degree of extra "thump" as you say.

My two concerns would be 1st, can the factory amp power the 8" replacements properly?

2nd, the mounting of the 8" replacements would entail some work. You'd either have to fab a bracket below the rear deck in order to mount the replacements too, or you'd have to cut a larger opening into the metal of the rear deck itself.

Simple answer is yes. Make sure the impedance is the same. Will you get more out of them you won't know until you try. I am about to start a audio system myself and from what I have read the sub signal from the amp clips earlier than the other channels, I don't know how much power you will really get to them. And without knowing the specs on the factory 6x9s it's impossible to say. They may be quite efficient and you won't notice a gain or even lose output.

Should I just replace them with a really good 6x9? If so what would be the best brands and models?

I have had good luck with my Kicker 6X9 also ordered Kicker for the center rear and instrument panel. The install was 2015 so I am sure whatever model I have has been updated.

Tang band makes a bad ass 6x9 sub But it's a weird size. Not a true 6x9.
You'd definitely want to give it more power though.
Not sure you'll get much improvement using the stock amp. I'll try to find the link.

I concur with Glockcoma on the Stock Amp needing improvement. I would recommend replacing with a good four channel if I recall I used the OEM AMP for the door speakers and the Kicker AMP for the 6X9 SUBS or the other way around but I am pretty sure I used both AMPS.

I e heard good things about them. But like you said they sent s true 6x9 so don't expect them to be a direct swap.

From what I read the stock amp clipped the sub output earlier than the other channels.
I just dropped my SHO off today with my installer for a full system. I asked him to let me know what he finds testing the stock amp outputs.

Update, installed tapped just the front speakers and got full range output. I can't answer for other outputs.
All my factory speakers were unplugged/removed except for the rear doors, the fader is just all the way front to keep them from playing music. My only issue is the beep when touching buttons is on the loud side now.

I replaced the four door speakers and the deck 6x9's with mid level Kickers all the way around. Amp was left stock. All in all the 6x9's sound a bit smoother than stock. My understanding is as mentioned above - the stock amp setup rolls off the frequency the louder you go. Honestly, in hindsight, I would've put the 6x9 money towards a dedicated sub/amp or powered sub setup to get real bass. I don't feel the bit extra clarity I got was completely worth it. Just understand you won't get "real" bass from just replacing the stock speakers and running the stock amp.

That's what I believed as well and possible does on the sub channel. I do not have issues with volume running eventhing off the front channels.
I believe the stock subs are 2 ohms, if you replaced them with 4 ohm subs you may have lost some output. Either way there is no replacement for displacement when it comes to bass.

Interesting....I have the Sony Sync system 2013 sho, would there be any benifit as in quality of sound in just replacing the stock 5x7's in the doors.? Worth changing the rear 6x9's too? I not interested in going crazy but I may do both and the two pillar tweeters too, but nothing else. Any thoughts?

Although the music palate is subjective to answer your question YES!! changing the stock speakers will be a VERY GOOD head start towards system improvement. The sound system both SONY and NON SONY is a decent system at least in my opinion. You can have SONY/BOSE/INFINITI system all day long but if they are pushed through $7.99 quality speakers that's what you get. Might I recommend that if you are removing the rear parcel shelf to replace the 6X9 SUBS then replace the center 3.5" with a good quality speaker. I used Kicker myself .your discretion. Since most speakers come in pairs you can use the other 3.5 " for the center instrument panel. A touch of minor trimming under the center speaker grille but nothing dramatic and the grill will cover up the trimmed area.

I totally get wanting a good sounding system and since removing the stereo itself is not really an option for 2013+ models The speakers are a very good head start but the next step after that is the factory AMP. Coming from a person who had both NON SONY and SONY Taurus models the speakers are a good start.

I couldn't answer other than the speakers look cheap to me but I added a DSP and amp along with upgraded speakers so it wouldn't be a fair comparison between the two.

It's true, in order to make base you need displacement. That displacement can either come from speaker diameter or speaker excursion. When I was designing speakers at Harman we make a test car with only a few 6.5" speakers and everyone thought it was a couple 12s. Large diameter speakers aren't required to make base, just proper design.

I'll be honest, speakers are CHEAP from the factory. When I say cheap I mean cost, not necessarily quality. I helped designed the rear speakers for the Lexus LFA and they were the most expensive speakers we designed for a production car. Total cost per speaker, just under $10. The standard speakers that are for sale to the public probably actually cost $2-$3 a piece in material cost. They sell them for hundreds because quality speakers have gone through extensive environmental and performance testing. But the speaker itself is actually dirt cheap.

I say this because I've seen so many people take quality systems with amps specifically EQ'd/designed for the factory speakers and actually make them sound worse by throwing in some generic consumer speaker that doesn't even have close to the same T/S parameters.

@Sgtmeatsauce1 I found the most improvement when I replaced the door speakers. Clarity was MUCH improved. I went with Kicker - many good options exist - running off the stock head and amp.
