Hello everyone,

I am about to let a local shop (recommended by shotimes.com hall of fame list) do a full 60k service + timing belt (100k?). I was quoted approximately $1500 and was told that would include the full 60k including waterpump, timing belt, ATX system flush and check, new plug well seals, and EGR adjustment.

First, is this a good price?

Secondly, what do i need to make sure they do as part of this service?

And last, do some of the experts here have some advice on some additional things I should consider doing or having check while they have it all opened up?

I asked about a transmission cooler and / or a shift kit and was told that they would check it and flush it (since we know it has been changed before) but they recommened NOT adding a shift kit or a cooler until it goes (which they said it would) and then do it all since just adding pieces may actually end its life prematurely). The shop said that the SHO engine is bulletproof and a great engine but that the ATX is garbage.

The shop seemed to really know what they are doing and the mechanic owns 3 of his own and is pretty much exclusively a SHO mechanic for them. He said that for $1500 he will make the engine as good as new and it would be never be a problem again (he said 300k is not uncommon if they are done right).

What say you all?

Thanks

We charge a little less than that for our "Level 3" 60k. Visit www.neshospecialists.com & go to the 60k page for the complete list of what we do.

Dealers charge more than that & do less, other shops may charge less than we do, but we're really proud of what we offer for the money.

Really, the big thing is to compare what you're getting for the money. We've been finding a lot of cam chain tensioners on the way out. That'll add another couple hundred, but you may want to be prepared for it.

You mentioned the "full 60K," but you didn't say anything about the major 60,000 mile services for both the 3.0L and 3.2L SHO engines: the valve gap adjustment and spark plug replacement. Along with this work on the upper part of the engine, the valve cover and plug well seals are usually replaced at 120,000 mile intervals and are part of the same Fel-Pro VS50378R gasket set. You may also want to replace the metal intake manifold-to-head gaskets. Some specialized SHO shops may also clean the interior of the intake runners and head ports while the intake is removed.

The front end engine work for your 3.2L SHO is on a 100,000 mile interval and includes the timing belt and accessory belt. Along with this service, the water pump (recommend the remanufactured front case half), crankshaft position sensor and front main crankshaft seal are usually replaced every 100,000 miles for the 3.2L and 120,000 miles (every other service) for the 3.0L.

It is very encouraging that the mechanic has three SHOs of his own. He must be aware of the car's special nature. Yes they can last 300,000 miles if you take care of them. The 60K/100K services are a key portion of this longevity.

Scott,

I received your lists via email and all I can say is THANK YOU! These will be a great help. Now I know why everyone refers to you as a SHO God on this forum, I am now a believer :)

Thanks again...

I think this is a little expensive unless they include everything especially the valve lash gap because the tools and shims are a pain to get your hands on. If you get everything done on Scott's list for that price done by a good SHO mechanic then go for it.

The valve lash is by far the easiest part of the 60K. I got my tools from SHOSHOP. All you need is a set of metric sockets, allen keys, feeler gages, plyers, torque wrench, pully puller, and a few other common tools as well as the valve shim compressor and hold down tool (shoshop) a set of dental picks (got those at Harbor Freight tools 4 bucks). You can also pick up the tools at some of the other sho specialty shops. Just keep in mind you really only need to buy the hold down and compressor from then (they are rather expensive for the other tools from them). As far as the shims if you contact Shoman94 he can get them for around 12 bucks for a packege of 5. I just got them from him and only had to use 7 of the 30 shims I purchased as the old shims were as good as new and I just shifted them around to bring all the clearences into spec. also unless you do it yourself who's to say it was really done once they put the cam covers on. Also how do you adjust an EGR mine definetly can't be adjusted.
