I'm currently doing the 60K, ordered the SHO Shop kit for the valves. Using the feeler gage all my clearences were perfect (in the center of the range). I looked at the top of the shims with out removing them from the engine and no pits or scratches were apperant. Do I need to remove each of the shims to properly inspect them for excessive wear?

The timing belt had about an 3/4 inch deflection, looked to be in good shape, but still replacing.

Plug wells all had some oil in them and my #6 cylinder had a dried coolant powder or maybe just dirt substance present.

I still have yet to find anything that would cause a clattering noise in the front/top of the motor. It was suggested it might be the fuel injectors and this is about the last item sense i eliminated the valves, timing belts, and acessories. How do I inspect the injectors to make sure they are function properly? Is there a decent upgrade for them? The noise was faintly present, then after I replaced the fuel filter and pump the noise was louder and progressivly got worse.

Last but not least the previous owner had managed to get " AC " plugs in. They have a number " 9 " on them and appear to be like the AC Delco Rapid fires that I put in my Jeep. They were quite carboned up. No wonder the SHO hardly could run. Going Motorcraft for the replacements.

Everything sounds good. Check the shim surface while it's still exposed. The injectors make a ticking noise that is normal as they cycle on and off.

Since you're replacing the timing belt, be sure to inspect the crankshaft for any sign of "cancer" around the keyway.

3/4 inch deflection of the timing belt is way too much. Inspect the inner faces of the belt covers and look for marks from the belt slapping it. That would have caused your noise you described. The belt is stretched and is overdue for replacement.

You should actually remove each shim and inspect it for physical damage or wear. If you don't and wear on the shim is present, you will eventually eat up the camshaft lobe.

Did you inspect the timing chain tensioners? (regarding the engine noise...)
BTW,
How does the SHOSHOP kit work? (the rental kit, which I am assuming , for some reason, is what you got) How much of your money do you get back, and how much does each shim you use reflect that amount?
Good luck!
