Had to replace the starter again last year this is the 4th, strange when F:swing:irestone changed the oil I noticed there was oil in the wiring protector that wraps the starter wires under the oil filter. This was hopefully the last time. had to break into it because with the battery unhooked and the doors locked with the hood closed and no door key for some reason the unlock button on the clicker wasn't working.

Letting the oil from the filter drain on the start it not good. The oil itself is non conductive so it won't short out but what it will do is get into the brushes and the ware particles will stick in there and freeze up the brushes so as they ware they can't extend. This stops the starter from working.

Remote filter = happy starter and cleaner oil changes. I have a dual filter setup below the stock airbox in the dead space behind the bumper. Two FL1 filters and about 7 1/2 quarts capacity.

Hopefully your lifetime warranty is better than my luck. 4 alternators in 2 years in my Mustang. It now has a "used" alternator and the lifetime one in under workbench. [I don't trust their rebuilds and won't buy from them.] The used one is now over 2 years old and got a extra tested used one. I will stop my rant now. Maurice

wow, that was painful. I have only once ever had so much trouble with a serpentine belt. the worst is the saturn sl series with the engine mount right in the way. took 1/2 hour to take the alternator off, 15 minutes to put it on and another 45 minutes to put the belt on.

Cut 2L soda bottle as shown:

EiB8W

Keep part with lid.

Stick soda bottle under oil filter when loosening. Rejoice as oil flows out bottle into drain. Obviously, take the lid off first.

Will try this next week Jason.

my 93 Sable SHO wagon had that problem. kept killing starters until I took the oil cooler off and replaced the seal behind that - it was leaking hot oil on the starter more or less continuously and it didn't take long before they would short out.

It is stuck at the auto parts store, I am not sure if thermostat being stuck open was letting the hot coolant out before and now being replaced is keeping in that thermal expansion. Maybe I will go down there and see if it starts.

unfortunately, the seal has been discontinued and is not available.

some guys have had success using an oil filter seal in that location, however I could not make that work as the seal is too small of diameter.

I did find at NAPA a piece that worked - 601-1363 iirc that is an oil filter seal for some Toyota, anyway, one of those o-rings works just fine in that location.

rubydist or anyone else that knows. Got a question and not sure. I remember reading in the process of doing my swap that there is 2 differant starters that will fit the SHO. I thought I had paper work on this in my build book. Going from memory. [I know] there is difference in starter teeth number. If this is true and please correct me if wrong. Could he possibly got the wrong one and that is what is causing problem? And what would he need to look at to know which one he has. Thanks in advance. Maurice

The difference, I think, would be the 5 speed vs the auto, the 3.2 is the automatic. I bought some de-greaser and had the thing towed. once I finally got to it it was getting dark and raining. this is the annual starter change.
also the starter was good as new, just didn't work good and clean, and bought a year and one month ago.
so including the one that was in there to begin with this is the 5th one.
