Well, i was driving to school this morning at 630 (in the pouring rain i might add) and when i get infront of my school, the car shuts off. How convenient, one would think...no. I coast into a parking spot, and its exactly what i thought. Fuel pump is dead...again...for the 2nd time in a month.

My question is...can my car do something that would cause the pump to fail? Or... Did i just get unlucky with 2 pumps? shrug

Maybe your gas tank is rusting apart from the inside? I know there was a recall on the gen II's that entailed cleaning the gas tank of rust or something. I'm pretty sure crap such as rust will eat up a pump. Did you change your fuel filter after changing the pump and inspect the old one? It might be kinda dangerous to cut the old one apart, beings it might spark and it still has gas in it. I never did take my old one apart because of this fear.

the question begs to be asked: what brand fuel pump was installed as replacement? OEM? or something cheaper?

could you have a simple elec. problem from the swap-out, like a bad ground? i would think it pretty damn unlucky to have gotten a bad new pump.

Heck, how about 3 bad pumps in 3 months on my buddys 93 :p One 120K likely original pump, followed by 2 Oreilys lifetime warranty units. I honestly can say I would never buy one of those simply b/c of that expierience. The "trap door" is a must, especially if you have the luck I did. As for installing a used fuel pump, you my friend are a glutton for punishment. nono

I also bought a pump from autoperformanceengineering. (isn't that a mouthful?). Shipped fast and comes with everything you'll need.

Couple of things to check... first off, did you replace the fuel filter? If you have an old fuel filter in there, then get it out cause a clogged one is gonna burn through pumps fast... second off.. it is possible that the relay could be sticking causing your pump to run constantly..

If you have an ohm meter and a couple of extra jumper wires try this... pull the relay, it will have a diagram on the side of it that will tell you which contacts should be making contact when.. the normally open ones should read "OFL" when the relay isnt powered up... the normally closed ones should read about 0.1 ohms... now apply 12v power and ground to the relay with your jumper wires... now the normally open ones should read 0.1 ohms, and the normally closed ones should read "OFL" also check for continuity between the no and nc contacts powered up and not.... those should read "ofl".... if you cant get your hands on an ohmmeter... or dont wanna go through the trouble.. just replace the relay... they are cheap.

Also, check for kinked fuel lines and replace if they are... that would cause the same effect as a clogged fuel filter
