How is this even possible? I was washing the car. The keys were left inside the car. True, I washed the keypad on the door, touched the door handle too. When I finished, I grabbed the handle and nothing happened. Car locked. Spare fob had to be used. Any ideas???

It’s a safety thing. I think the car knows if the fob is inside the car. If not then anyone could just walk up to the door and open it, if your at a stop light or something.

You can lock the keys in the car by pressing the 7/8 9/0 button together or using another fob.

If you use the interior switch the car will see your key in the car and unlock the doors. It should also do that for the trunk.

The exact answer is in the owner's manual you read.

You remembered your keyless entry number right? The one you programmed to Your memory position and key fob?

Any chance you locked the house and that key is in the car too?

Thanks guys. Johnbigdog is correct. I must have hit 7890 all at one time, because I just tried it and it did lock the car with the keys in it. And yes, my keyless entry number did let me back in. The house was unlocked.

These cars are clearly smarter than me.

I just found out you can lock the fob in the car. My father does this often when going to the beach, etc where he doesn't want to lose/stolen/get the fob wet and will bring the physical key only. I didn't believe it and tried it on the Explorer rental I had when visiting and sure enough it will let you lock them and will not unlock without mechanically unlocking.

And I'll just ;leave this here;

So if your battery in the FOB is dying, will it let you lock the car with it running? I went to a restaurant, started the car to get the AC going, left my FOB in the cup hoolder, closed the door, walked over to my wife and kid as they were looking at another car, went back to my car and it's locked! WTF? How?

I did the same thing by accident a few years ago. Left the Fob inside thinking I wouldn't scratch the paint by leaning over the body when I was drying. Apparently I hit the 7-8-9-0 combination with the washing wand. Picture this Sunday afternoon, dealer about 300 miles away, no access to original deal jacket (locked in the title clerks office) service no clue what the Keyless Entry pad number combination is. AAA came out no charge as a road side assistance call but still took about two hours. After that I remembered the combination and made sure the key fob was never alone inside the car again. Fast forward about five months later down in TX the car wash did pretty much the same thing but in this case they left the car running. Still not sure how it locked but it did. This key ring had my car, apartment key too, as well as the garage fob. Had to get a ride home from car wash manager, stop at leasing office get spare key to get into apartment then ride back. Remember the Keyless entry pad and if new change.

I would be totally screwed if any of those things happened to me. I have no spare key, and my keypad does not work. I've gotten out of my car a few times while it's running, but I always have the fob in my pocket.

If you only have one key, I would highly recommend getting another. If you lose that one, you will have to buy 2 to get the car going due to how Ford's PATS system works. To program a new key you have to have a minimum of 2. If it gets really bad, you may be in for a new B.C.M. the reason is if you can't get pats PATS C.A.N. protection, the next step is a module that is ready to acept new keys. And keys since your keypad is inop.

PLUS it's nice to not have to worry about not having a spare key in the instance of.... sun. of.. a... :)

He is right. I recently purchased a used Audi with only one key. Dealer says only had one but I can't prove different. I am sucking it up at dealer during the software update and airbag recall visit.

Moral of the story...if you go to car wash... KEEP KEY FOB on your person. I would rather them call me back to re start if they accidentally hit stop button than the other two alternatives.
The car wash I typically go asks every time if I have my keys on me. They probably had it happen too many times.
