Well, it's based on an eighties Volvo chassis, so.....
I didn't know this. I don't know much about platform design at all. Does sound outdated when you say it like that. That Fusion you mentioned as being much more capable. That's a mid-size sedan right? So just make one bigger for a full size sedan at the same time this will carve some weight from the old platform. Is that how it works?

End of cycle basically means there won't be any major changes no new body or anything. Think about the last US Ranger model. It was around almost 10 years. But with the last contract it is stated it will be over by end of contract.

Also, the platform was significantly beefed up in 2010 to handle the ecoboost engine. The platform is a very stiff and rugged one - suitable for police duty. The drawbacks are that it is heavy and interior space is not as roomy as you would expect considering the exterior size.

True, the EPA will see to that! But, all I can say, with the traffic around here, we need big heavy cars to survive the 18 wheelers constantly tailgaiting us :) FWIW. Plus they are a little more resistant to high crosswinds that seem to be increasingly commonplace.

I stand corrected. It's a fresh 20 year old design.:) All kidding aside, I do like the car but I do think it's the end of an era of cars with this weight, size and HP.
Many many makes and models are using platforms that are just as old, or older. I suppose they are finding it harder to improve with a new platform design. Small changes to great platforms result in the platforms needed.

While I personally hope Ford continues to sell the Taurus and produce it in the US, I can also understand the business side of it. Full size sedans have sort of become a redheaded step child and are very difficult to market. If you want fuel economy midsize or smaller will give that and if you need room/utility then crossover/suv triumphs the full size sedan. Also the price of a new niche vehicle like the SHO or Chevy SS or SRT Mopar mid 40-50k starts to approach luxury sedans and opens up other options. Just hope the "bean counters" in the glasshouse are not making the decision and both the Taurus/SHO continue in a completely updated package

Ever notice that Ford never produces a commercial showing the Taurus in it? There were the initial commercials for the SHO, but overall, I NEVER see a Taurus. Every Ford commercial on TV around here (Metro NY suburbia area) when they show the lineup, shows F150 down to the Focus and Fiesta, but what's missing? A Taurus.

On the other hand, CAFE ratings being what they are, I don't think they CAN sell more...

And I was in a Fusion the other day - it's smaller inside than the Taurus, shoulder-width-wise. It SEEMS to have more room because the console is skinnier, and there's that open space under the dash in the middle, but overall, it's still a little claustrophic for me - compared to a T-bird/Cougar or my 2001 F250 :)

Last year we decided to replace my wife's 2008 Taurus. She wanted AWD, heated seats and remote start, none of which was on her 2008. I felt that a Fusion with the 2.0 and that equipment would be perfect.

We drove a Fusion 2.0 and a Taurus with the standard V6 back-to-back. The Taurus rode better, was quieter and just seemed like a more solid and better built vehicle. The V6 performs very well and gets good mileage. The kicker was that we were able to get the Taurus for less money than the Fusion.

Affirmative but not loaded to PhotoBucket yet. It was a Ruby Red with Dune Interior if that starts painting a picture.
