Just bought a 2016 SHO and discovered Apple Carplay was quite achievable. The 2016's did not come with carplay, but it was added in a SYNC3 Software update the following year. On top of that you have to buy a new centre console USB Hub, as the ports have a different number of pins or something like that. So far, I have done the following:

-Updated SYNC3 to version 3.0 using a USB. In Setting>General, this is now displayed as my current version. From what I can find version 2.2 and above have carplay.
-I have tried 2 different sets of USB Hubs, one I purchased from a Ford dealership and one from Amazon. Both part numbers HC3Z-19A387-B and costing about $100 CAD (the stock replacement is $30, so to my knowledge these are the upgrade).
-After changing Hubs, I enabled mobile apps in SYNC, updated my iPhone XR to iOS 15.7, and enabled carplay in two separate spots in phone settings.
-Plugged it in, nothing. Videos I've seen show carplay just appearing, this did not happen. Tried multiple wires, tried a master reset of SYNC, and tried both different "upgraded" USB Hubs. No Carplay in site after plugging in multiple times.

If anyone has experienced this, please let me know. If it is a lost cause I will just return the USB's and save myself the $100 I guess.

First and easiest thing I would try is deleting all phones from the car and then plugging the phone in. I have had the issue after an update a couple times that Android Auto won't be there and it won't install when I plug in to a phone that is already listed. Clearing the list seems to help.

Beyond that, I would suggest looking into CyanLabs. This will allow you to upgrade to 3.4+. Then if you want more stuff to customize, check out FMods and Jailbreaking the Sync 3. Minus having to have 3 thumb drives to complete the process, all of these are free mods/hacks.

Bookmark this site - there is this guy from YT - he can help for sure:

Stay away from eBay and Amazon, I bought an Amazon upgrade kit - there was a mass recall for bad Sync 3.x in 2016+

model Fords where the APIM would burn out, many Chinese origin companies bought up the bad recalled Sync - upgrade them resell and you will experience my problem of a vamipiric battery drain .... long story short pay more and source from trusted vendors like the YT guy.

Not sure what you mean, for 2016s you already have sync 3. So for the most part you just need an updated usb hub and to update your sync aipm module. I don’t think you need to change it out for mine
