I removed about a 6" strip out of the outer hood seal on my car right in front of the intake scoop a couple weeks ago.
I figured the air and/or any water entering through the gap in the hood and now straight into that intake scoop goes down into the airbox, which I make sure the drain holes are free and clear.
I figure in the long run I'll keep an eye on the air filter and may end up replacing them at every oil change with factory replacements.
Now the good news is that is seemed to have added at least 1mpg on average, after 1000 miles or so.
