Wow, it's been quite a while since I've been here...

I'm finally looking to get back into an SHO! My first car was a black 1990 SHO. I popped two differentials in it, and junked the car after pulling the motor shortly before moving to the east coast, but I digress.

I'm looking at picking up a 2014 SHO tomorrow. However, I noticed an oddity in the pictures. It seems as if from 2010 until 2012 Ford used a "T" style shifter in the SHO. In 2013 until current, they're using a smaller sleeker shifter.

The 2014 I'm looking at has the "T" style shifter, and I have no idea why. It's being sold at an independent dealership, and they bought it from an auction--so I assume they have no history on the car.

Does anyone have any idea why this car would have a shifter from a 2010-2012 model?

Previous owner likely just swapped out the OEM shifter (from the 2013's and up) to that of the 'T' handle style from the '10-'12 model years.

I recall some grumblings (over the years) on the various forums about owners of the 13's and up, liking the '10-'12's, and vice versa.

Is that a common-ish mod? I found one post on the ecoboostperformance forums, but the thread kind of died off without an actual resolution as to how to install the T handle onto the new-style shifter.

I wouldn't necessarily common in the true sense, but I recall it being discussed.

Would this concern you at all if you were going to look at it? Best case scenario, it's a simple shifter swap. What could it be worst case scenario?

Flood victim? Examine it carefully. Check in the spare tire well for any obvious water intrusion. Paranoid me is thinking that someone swapped the interior for some reason. But who knows... maybe they just swapped the shifter, or broke it and had to replace it with whatever they could find.

I too would be glad to know if it's and easy swap to the earlier handle. I like the look of the one in my 2018, but do think the earlier version may be easier to use....

Update:

I bought the car. The independent dealer didn't know a lot about the car. I found out that it was *not* a performance pack that they had advertised, however, a previous owner modified it to be a performance pack. The previous owner installed their own switch to "hard off" the traction/stability control. They vented the bypass valves to the atmosphere, installed lowering springs, an aftermarket exhaust, and I'm pretty sure it has some kind of tune on it as the car smells super rich after a romp on the accelerator. As for the shifter handle, like bpd1151 said, I'm confident that the previous owner swapped it for the older model.

Good luck with the SHO! I'd be glad to see a pic of the shifter...

Car looks nice! I need that manual override switch for TC! Looks like they put sync 3 and the Focus RS startup screen on it too lol. That car was well loved, wonder what other goodies they left you.

I just was talking to a coworker about this. It seems as if the previous owners did more to the car than I had anticipated! I was just Googling and it looks as if the Sync 2 to 3 upgrade is a full hardware upgrade, somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,100. That's wild.

Do you have any documentation on the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) and RDU (Rear Differential) fluid changes? I would consider those top priority right now. All in all the car looks great and I love that Red. Mind saying what you paid?

I do not have any maintenance documentation--however, it seems the previous two owners took the car to a Ford dealership every 10k miles or so for maintenance. I have been meaning to check the fluids, as the car came from a small independent dealer and I doubt they had the car gone through. Not including taxes/tags/fees I got the car for $18,200.

It can be considerably cheaper if you source the parts yourself but still a nice upgrade as SYNC 3 is a much better interface and has Carplay(you would need to change the USB hub in the center console to the newer style)
