My SHO has developed a vibration under acceleration and it is getting worse every day.
Took it to my mechanic, checked engine and transmission mounts, drive shaft play and only bad thing we could find was a torn boot on the front passenger side cv axle. The joint is dry and shows some rust so this could be it although I fear it could be the PTU.

Looking to buy the replacement I found that the PN for the 2010 is DG1Z3B436E but it shows as discontinued.
Called the local dealer and the parts guy said this part was replaced by TX833 but he also said that the part was redesigned and now I also had to replace the intermediate shaft, bearing and bracket.

I am going to check to see if I see any labels on the cv shaft, not sure if these have ever been replaced and maybe I get lucky.

Has anyone here gone though this or have access to a technical bulletin that outlines this?

@Johnbigdog quoting you hoping you can help.

I dont see any t.s.b.s about this but I have seen supeceeded parts that require other newer parts to work properly.

There are tools that measure vibrations and can help isolate what is causing the vibration, the intensity and its order. So what I mean is the tool may say there is a 1st order tire vibration at .2 Gs.

What this means is something that is spinning at wheels speed has a vibration that occurs once per revolution at .2Gs. It doesnt tell you if that is a wheel, a tire, a rotor, wheel bearing, half shaft or carrier but it's closer than knowing nothing

Thanks for the info.

Not sure who would offer that service, most shops/dealers I know/heard of replace parts at random until they hit the right one. Very little analysis these days.

If it was a bad CV joint, the vibration could be x1, x2 or x4 depending on how bad is it, don't you think? One hit per damaged bearing.

I found what the dealer was referring to:

I crawled under the vehicle and found that the CV axle currently installed looks like the revised part and it doesn't have the four bolt ****** as shown above.

I also found a piece of the original label on the CV axle. This confirms that the part I have is DG1Z3B436?

Capture1

Also found a piece of the label of the intermediate shaft. I haven't been able to match it to any PN's.

Capture2

And this is the culprit. Torn boot, dry joint and possible cause of the vibration:

Still don't know why the dealer said the new PN was TX-833. On many sites I keep finding DG1Z3B436E. o_O

I plan to remove the shaft in a few days and take it to the dealer. I don't know if mine came with the 4 ****** shaft or maybe someone updated it later, @bdp1151, since yours is also a 2010 and the shaft might be laying around in your garage, what type is it? I'm suspecting this 4 ****** shaft never came on the SHO.

The shorter part number is usually a Motorcraft replacement part number vs the Ford part number.

Easy way to confirm is use the rock auto website put in your part number or go through the car menu and look at part options. they often use the oem part number in their replacement part offering for reference.

Update:

Not knowing if the inner shaft had to be replaced, I decided to not tackle this on my own and took it to my mechanic last night. I told him what I knew and what the dealer said.

He just called and sure enough the new cv axle does not fit on the old inner shaft. He said the diameters changed so my $350 repair just jumped to $700+…

Got the inner shaft and bracket yesterday, dropped them at my mechanic to have them installed.
Mechanic called this morning and he said the inner shaft didn't fit into the PTU... drove there and sure enough the part was different, way different.

After calling the dealer and looking at the PN on the box and the PN on the shaft, we concluded the part was misboxed. The part I got was for a 2WD Taurus and they won't be able to get me the right part till Tuesday.

The irony is that I always buy my own parts (mostly in the US) and take them to my mechanic. He is ok with this as he knows I know what I'm doing and I've never taken the wrong parts to him. Because of the borders being closed due to Covid, I was planning on getting the parts at a local dealer so I asked the mechanic if he preferred to get them himself but he asked me to get them for him as usual so now the fault relies on me and I will most likely have to pay extra labor as they'll take the car apart twice... :madflame:

I need a beer !

The part finally arrived, there was only one in Ontario (which is the one I got) so they had to bring one of the three existing in Alberta (like 3,000 km away).
Parts guy called this morning and guess what... the part he just got is also incorrect ! :madflame:
He called Ford to check the other two parts he said where in Alberta and sure enough they are also wrong...
Not sure how this happens, a total of 4 parts and all of them misboxed

So now he said he needs to place a new order that will come from the US... one or two weeks from now. Glad I do not need the SHO.

I dont know if it will help, but you may be able to call Ford customer service for Canada and see if they can help expedite the part for you.

The intermediate shaft finally arrived yesterday, dealer told me he double checked the PN and it is what the system calls for my vehicle.
This part has the steps that go into the PTU but it also has this ring that the old part does not have.

Capture

Last night I took the car back to the shop and placed it on the hoist. The outer diameter of that ring looks smaller than the inner diameter of the plastic cover on the PTU so it looks like it fits in there and by looking at this pic that @Jordan_R shared, it all makes sense now.

Capture

Not sure why the old part didn't have it, it seems that it should have.

Mechanic was going to work on it first thing today and since the phone hasn't rang, I assume it all went well.
Will pick it up later today, hope this fixes the vibration.

Picked up the car last night. All went well with the revised intermediate shaft.
Vibration is gone !

Had the PTU fluid changed, mechanic might have overfilled it or touched the exhaust with dirty hands as there was a very strong burnt oil smell by the time I got home.

I wonder when were these parts revised, which year came out with the new ones? If any one knows let me know and I'll change the thread title so it hopefully helps others when the time comes.
