I am considering a freaking dumb and most likely a huge failing project....

Can a Gen 1 SHO be Shortened? I am considering cutting one in half, getting rid of the back seat and doors and welding it back together.

Can this be done (in theory i know it can be)
(More like) Has this been done?
Will this be safe? (i am planning on using 1/4" steel plate and a roll cage)
I have not bought the car yet so are their any vital components in the back seat area?

And most importantly what the **** is wrong with me ?

Don't just shorten it, lengthen the door by moving the b pillar back too. I wouldn't take out the entire rear though, maybe 10-12". Pointless, but it'd be very neat to see.

And make it RWD and have 600 horsepower.

This isn't the right section for this.

Yes it can be done and done safely. I worked with a guy who had his own body shop for a while. He used to take 2 cars, one with front end damage and one with rear. Cut them in half and make 1 good car.

Just watch any electrical and lines (brakes, fuel) that go fron front to back.

Before you go any further with this dream, you should go look at a taurus that is already cut in half. The way the unibody is constructed is a real eye opener. You wont be able to cut it near any of the three pillars due to the extreme gusseting that is employed in those locations. So you have about 3" under the front seats and maybe 4" in the back that would be suitable locations for the sectioning.

Just make sure you get the door and rear quarter panel proportions correct otherwise it'll never look right. Longer doors and quarter panels at least.

Swap a 3.2 into a Thunderbird. Instant(ish) 2 door SHO and rear wheel drive.
If going into a foxbody T-bird. You will have the same nightmares I have had. I agree would look nice. My bodyshop buddy [one going to do my car] Made a 4 door Ford Fiest, a coupe Corvair, several dual tire mini trucks and several v-8 Corvairs. So anything is possible. Like pointed out money and skill. Maurice

He meant the next generation, the MN12. Very similar styling to the gen 2 SHO. Too bad they're close to 4000 lbs. The Supercoupes even had the same seats as a SHO, but with a tilt forward function so passengers can get in the back.

Weight would be a problem. But turbo would help in that area. Unsure on the next gen. I know on the next gen Mustang the crossmember is almost identical. So unsure. Here is some pictures of what I had to do. I wouldn't go with A4LD maybe c-4 or AOD with the SHO adapter plate. Maurice

I am planning to after this trial fit and run. Removing pan and adding bump out on passenger side for more oil capacity.

Edit so that is what a MN12 is. Learned something.

Been thinking about this for almost 2.5 years. Was about to do this twice, but has a lot of unexpected stuff come up. My friend, who owns a bodyshop, said, that it's a piece of cake. If you want to make it a 2 seater, then you would need to line back up to front in order to keep car look like a car. Without stretching doors it is very simple. by stretching the car, you're making it much stronger already, so no need for roll cage, unless you're making it extream racing car, or something like that.
Very good idea.
NOthing is wrong with you. If you keep yourself busy, you won't have bunch of stupid mental problems and possibly physical problems. I do all kinds of crap like that all the time and feel better just thinking about it. Otherwise I get depressed, lazy and who knows what else.
