I've noticed that after I drive my SHO and park it there is a ticking sound coming from the engine area. Like something that's really hot that's cooling down. I know I've heard other cars do this, my co-worker's Toyota Camry has a similar ticking.
My question is, is there something in the engine bay that's getting too hot and then cooling too fast? I just want to make sure I'm not hurting anything.

If I'm not mistaken, that ticking sound is just oil dripping back into the pan. I guess it's just louder on some cars than on others.

I've heard almost every car I've ever seen doing that, so i don't think it is anything bad..

I don`t mean to alarm you,but it could be very bad.The Gen III`s are starting to have problems with the cam sprockets separating from the cams.It does make a ticking sound.

All cars for the most part do that, just the different types of metal (aluminum, iron, etc) cooling at different rates.

As for the V8 cam problem, that's only when the car is running. This noise is when the car is off.

I agree. As far as I have always known, the ticking is just metal cooling at different rates.

SHHHHH! don't you dare bring the cam sproket thing back up jthomas68. I will not hear any more of it

Yeah the cam sproket issue is only when the car is running and you can clearly hear it. There are some sound files on v8sho.com I really doubt a V6 SHO engine will do it tho.

I think most of the ticking noises that everyone hears is coming from the heat shields on the cats. These get close to 300 degrees, then all of a sudden are allowed to cool in an environment about 230 degrees cooler. The car is bound to make noise.

Thanks guys. Like I said, I've heard it on other cars, but never exactly knew what it was. This board is great!

Yah my friend's Contour SVT does the same thing.. you stand there with the hood open long enough and you'll hear some nasty-loud SNAPS. Gotta love how expansion rates differ between various materials.
