Ugh, sorry to hear, no powertrain coverage?

EBay? Online dealer sites like Tasca, Levittown Ford, etc?

I don't have great hopes for coverage, but it's worth asking about. Try one of the online places like floodfordesp, lombard's, etc. I don't know if you can afford to wait to repair the SHO, there might be a "probationary" period before the warranty applies. Like home warranty contracts, 30-45 days, for example.

If that route doesn't work, you could always call up Ford National Customer Service (number in back of owner's manual) and see if you can work something out with them, as you are not far out of warranty by miles, and really barely out of the B2B warranty by years. They have reps on the Edge and Flex forums, that I know for sure, and they tend to be very helpful.

Is blowing a turbo a common occurrence in these cars or a rare one?

It's not frequent, but often enough to be known to happen. Did I dance around it well enough? :D Due to GDI & the PCV system "working" together, some failures may be due to turbine coking, others due to use of catbacks with excessively low backpressure (it is speculated). Yet others may be due to too much heat on the rear turbo (tight packaging in that space) causing early failure despite water AND oil cooling design.

So keeping the PCV system clean, keeping intercooler clean, and frequent engine oil/filter changes with quality parts are all important for the turbos to "arrive alive". Theoretically you don't HAVE to have a cooldown period for them after a hard run, but allowing a minute or two to cooldown afterwards in that situation is never a bad idea.

Sorry that didn't work out for you! You can probably find a manual online on DVD (ebay for example) to supplement your DIY efforts.

Rear turbo is a bit of a pain, mine was leaking at 14k. You have to drop the subframe.
