This just goes to show what a meaningless number HP is ... TQ is where it's at, and what you can feel.
<soapbox>

Although I've been echoing this exact sentiment for awhile now, few people seem to believe me when I say it, even when I reinforce the statement with hard math and descriptive reasons. I'm glad to see someone else publicly add further credence to the subject. Even "The VOD" had some really good comments to make about the myth in that SHOtimes article. ;)

Except in the cases of certain analytical studies or just for sheer bragging rights, horsepower figures are completely useless. If you want to know how your engine is performing, then all you need to do is analyze your torque curve, plain and simple.

... and guess what ... we have a loggable device that measures the effects of torque directly, so you can tune on a level straight stretch of pavement ;-)

2-axis G-force sensor to directly measure the effects of torque (can be used with any 0-5V logger) (new low price) PLX-GFS 79.00

Now, here's how I look at it:

Torque is what causes acceleration. More torque, more acceleration. So torque helps you in a transient condition.

HP is the power that is required to overcome air resistance. More HP, the faster your top speed is. So HP helps you in a steady state condition.

Over simplified, but easy to understand ;-)

You can not have HP without TQ. Neither number is meaningless. Anybody ever taken a spin on a 600cc crotch rocket?

:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Torque is the force pushing down on the piston. HP is just a calculated number. If torque goes up, hp goes up. If torque goes down, hp goes down.

One of the neat things about custom tuning, is that over the years you learn some neat things. If you log load (volumetric efficiency), the curve will match your torque curve, and if you log MAF volts, that will match your hp curve.

Exactly ...

Check this out, this is how I figure out the correct secondary opening point - where the load lines cross.

See how that's close the torque curve of the motor, assuming a good tune? :) If the tune is bad, it's the 'torque potential'.

Are you talking about new billet cams, or exotic grinds?

The former is obscenely expensive, and the latter is something that may happen.

I was talking billet cams. I made a bunch of calls years ago to several different cam manufactures enquiring about custom cams and their quotes were 1100-1500 and were just aproximate estamates. The killer was that they were not willing to do any R&D on them even if quantity was purchased (25 sets). They just wanted specs. I don't think those prices are unreasonable for 4 cams.

what did you have in mind for exotic grinds? I really want a lumpy cam. "I bought the best and it made a huge difference" that is what i want to be able to say.

Then talk to us offline. We have a top secret cam project (not the +10's ...) that we are looking at starting. It's been proven to produce really good results in other cars, but won't be cheap.
