914-SHO Surging RPMs - Issue Solved?

I've got to move out of the carburator era :-). That makes sense. Thanks to all. By the time I'm doing the electronics on mine I'll know lots of tricks. Charlie

914-SHO Surging RPMs - Issue Solved?

I just looked at the engines in the garage. When I loosen the screws on the TPS it seems like it will rotate just a little. Not much but maybe enough to be a concern in the throttle just off idle case we are talking about. Gerard, maybe you could put your meter on the TPS and verify a change...

914-SHO Surging RPMs - Issue Solved?

Running it at 1800 RPM unloaded doesn't take much throttle I assume. Maybe the TPS isn't getting the message to the computer that the throttle is cracked open and it is trying to fix the idle as suggested earlier. Is the TPS adjustible? Could you turn the TPS a little to assure it is telling the...

    914-SHO Project Thread

Well , one thing we have learned about Gerard is that he is not a quitter.:) I am certainly learning lots at his expense......so thanks! Charlie

    914-SHO Motor teardown & inspection

Do you think it is crank related or maybe just 6 freshly honed cylinders dragging the rings?

    Transmission Adapter Photos

I don't know that I've ever read about anyone using the A4LD bellhousing. It is odd that an automatic has a removable bellhousing and that the part is normal enough to adapt but it is actually a very nicely cast piece and not too hard to adapt. A T-5 would be fairly straight-forward to adapt...

    Transmission Adapter Photos

Hi All, I setup a personal album at SHO Speed and uploaded the photos of the adapter I built. I'll post later detailing the project. http://www.shospeed.com/gallery/gallery/album.php?album_id=117 Charlie

    914-SHO Motor teardown & inspection

I did some reading on ring end gaps. I was right that the top ring runs hotter and closes the gap more. However, there are other things going on. It seems that the larger second gap assures that gasses that get by the top ring can get by the second ring as well. That way the pressure below the...

    914-SHO Motor teardown & inspection

The smaller gap for the top ring vs. second ring seems odd. IIRC other engines I've built had a larger gap on the top ring. The top ring runs hotter.....more room for expansion would make sense to me. Thoughts? Charlie

    Water Pump Housing Info

I was going to go thermostat cover shopping at my local U Pick yard today but it is snowing like crazy here. I'm going to see if I can find a 90 degree cover to use as a starting point.

    Water Pump Housing Info

Hi Again, just to clarify, I mean the housing not the pump. The piece the transfer tube goes into at the front of the engine. The answer you gave already probably applies but I wanted to be sure we were talking about the same thing. Thanks!

    Water Pump Housing Info

Good Afternoon All, I'm still pursuing the concept of a front outlet for the thermostat. I was going to see about hooking up to the top of the pump housing where the big freeze plug goes in. I have a 3.0 and a 3.2 in the garage. I'm looking to eventually build the 3.2 so I don't want to...

    RWD Cooling Option

I originally started with the thought that I could just pull the freeze plug on top of the pump housing and use that as an entry point. However, I think it is too high and too close the the cam gear on that side. I think those problems could be solved but the transfer tube just looked like an...

    RWD Cooling Option

Hi All, Tom, just to be sure we are communicating, the plan is to start with a 1 1/4" aluminum mandrel bend trimmed to Y into the transfer tube in the valley and sneak out the front between the pump housing and injector boss on the right head. Once out through the timing case I'll cap it with...

    RWD Cooling Option

I got some time in on the car today. I'm working on the steering column base, pedals and such. When I get that stuff sorted out I'll close up the firewall. In the meantime, I took a look at the front thermostat option. I don't see any reason it wouldn't work just fine. Here is an idea...

    RWD Cooling Option

There were acouple other questions somewhat off the cooling question that I'll answer here. Guess I'm hijacking my own thread... This is going in a 68 Datsun Roadster. They have a traditional ladder frame and double A suspension in the front. So, the engine compartment is narrow down low...

    RWD Cooling Option

Good Morning, Thanks for the thoughts. Maybe I'll go out to the garage and tear down the front of the engine enough to look at the pump and see if the block return is on the suction or pressure side of the pump. However, with the flow direction still to be resolved does it really matter...

    RWD Cooling Option

Hi All, I'm doing a RWD swap into a 68 Datsun Roadster. It is a long slow project but I'm having fun dealing with the various issues and challenges. Mr. 914 SHP has encouraged me to post a build thread and I may do that one of these days.... Anyway, the question of the day deals with an...
