I have a 1990 Taurus GL. With the 3.0L Vulcan. Power steering and all that jazz. I was wondering (since you guys are the SHO experts) would it be at all possible to throw (not literally) in a '93 SHO ATX motor? The shifter I have is on the steering wheel. would that cause any problems?

Sorry if this gets asked a lot I looked, but didn't find any previous threads about this.

Thanks in advance.

The easiest way would be to change the entire drivetrain, i.e., a motor and a transmission on a subframe.

There'd be some work with wiring, getting the cable and vacuum stuff right for the shifter, etc., but it's always possible. Might need to move around a lot of the a/c plumbing as well.

Everything is possible. Are your wrenching and wiring skills pretty good? Sounds like alot of work compared to the actual cost of a 93ATX SHO.

Yeah they're good if they aren't good enough my dad and my uncle are kickass (sorry if expletives aren't allowed).

But I COULD keep the steeringwheel shifter (with some modifications) am I correct in assuming this?

I was planning on pulling the engine, and tranny so erm moving the a/c plumbing isn't that diffcult.

Will I have to custom weld the subframe or do you guys know if the mounts line up?

I'd jsut buy a 94 SHO if the body on my taurus weren't in pristine condition (give for 4 dents and some scratches).

Sorry for all the questions. But I love my taurus, even it's an old lady...

The body panels are different but unibody is the same and the subframe should bolt right up. Everything is doable with enough skill and pisse..err..determination to finish. Good luck with this. It sounds like a neat project. Nothing I would tackle, but I don't have kickass wrenching relatives to help me out either. :) You'll need to probably swap the wiring harness and grab the exhaust y-pipe too. Might be able to use the whole 93 catback too if it's available.

While the SHO motor is out of the car it's the perfect time to change the rod bearings... and they're cheap.

I don't know the details of the differences between the two, but you'll probably need to fab/finagle a cable that works with the SHO ATX tranny. The SHO also uses some vacuum lockouts that may or may not exist with the column shift. It's always possible, so the short answer to your question is 'yes'. Unknown to me how much work it'll involve.

Use the entire subframe/tranny/engine/steering rack assembled together from an ATX SHO. The subframe, and the front knuckles/suspension, will bolt up to the regular Taurus body.

Search around, there are a number of transplants that have been done that may be applicable.
