Today, just getting home from having new rear rotors and pads installed, I threw a belt. When I pulled over I looked inbetween the battery and intake an noticed that the pulley which is at about 7:30 or 8:00 pm in relation to the alternator pulley was all ragged. Can anyone tell me which part #this pulley is, which part # the belt is and suggest good places to purchase this pully ( or a new or lightly used full set of pulley's). I am hoping this is the extent of the damage. The car will turnover but not start. Suggestions and opinions appreciated. :angelnot:

Is this an ATX or an MTX? Your sig doesn't say.

As long as it's just the bearing that is wrecked, and the pulley itself is ok, SHONUT sells new bearings.

I would say its most likely your idler pulley. That would be at about the 8 position. As for belt size, I wam going to assume you have an ATX (1 belt) so I dont know the size. The MTX has 2 belts...the front/wider belt being 44.5" IIRC.

I have an ATX, fixed my sig to reflect that. as for the pulley, the whole thing is gone not just the bearing, the outside track was all chewed up which I think caused the belt to shred, I tried to find the whole pulley set about a year ago, without much luck, although I found one almost new (less than 5000 k miles) pulley on ebay.

BTW good photo of the pulley I speak of here: http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=93708

Again any suggestions on where to find the whole pulley set would be appreciated.

I would post a WTB. The idler is the pulley very close to the alternator in about the 8 o'clock position as you described.

Too bad I threw away a bunch of parts...including a near brand new ATX idler pulley/bracket/etc. Moving...and needed to pitch some stuff.

Look in the classifieds here for people parting cars. You can look on ebay. Ray at midnight auto might still have a bunch of stuff. You can search for him here on the forum or he has a store on ebay.

What is the name for the pulley that sits between the ac compressor and the crank pulley, it is the one that appears to be made partly of plastic?

For a picture of the atx pulley set up click here:

http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=93708

thanks,

I've been buying pulley parts from folks in the WTB section but I have been buying the wrong parts:brainfart:

I have posted pictures of what is left of the pulley I need here: http://s385.photobucket.com/albums/oo292/nistah/

If anyone could positively identify the correct name of the pulley in the photos I would be eternally grateful (need to get the sho back on the road!!!)
keep in mind what is left may just be the center, there may have been plastic around the outside that sheared off,
Thanks,

There is only one pulley between the A/C compressor pulley and the crank pulley, and that is the Lower Idler pulley. Very, very few of these exist any more.

The top idler pulley will work just fine. I know this because I'm running two top idler pullies in both of my ATXs. If you received a top (metal) idler pulley, just go ahead and throw it in.

If it didn't just sit there and spin I'd be more worried about it but... yeah, it just sits there and spins.

Good to know, I received a top (metal) idler pulley, so I'll just go ahead and throw it in. I'll let you all know how this works out.....:thankyou:

Ya velcom! Pay attention to the orientation of the washer and bolt sleeve; the alignment of the pulley will be off if you don't (don't ask me how I know). The bolt sleeve has a shoulder on one end; this goes toward the block. The washer goes on the outer side of the pulley, and is sandwiched by the bolt.

At least, I'm pretty sure that's how it is. It's been a while since I did mine, and it is ********* down rain right now!

OK so I found out that to do this I need an Extra Grooved Washer and an extra Spacer(bolt Sleeve), Trying to find both of these, are they generic, could I buy them at advance auto parts? There is a pulley spacer from a 97 SHO on Ebay that looks identical can anyone confirm if they are the same & advise where to find the grooved washer?
