Wondering what you all think about this idea. Basically, I want ultra clear tail lamps... I like the look of the LED tails a lot, but really don't like LED's in general (look out of place on a 93 Taurus IMO, as do blue headlights).

Best idea I could come up with (since this is something I'd obviously have to do myself), would be to copy something similar to what 94-98 Mustangs use. I'm only toying with this idea. If it turns out to be a total PITA, I may not. But If it isn't too terribly hard, I may try it as a winter project.

The idea: remove the factory lenses from the housing, and replace the inner chrome with a style that was used on a Mustang, and then finish it off with a new ultra clear lens. I figure the chrome pieces could be adapted from something else decently easily, but the new lenses might be the tough part. I may have to buy LED tails just for the lenses, and at that point, it's probably not worth it.

Here's a pic for reference. Ideas?

White lenses with red bulbs? Well no not red, chrome bulbs that light up red! So the whole thing stays clear looking.

I think that would look terrible. And shame on you for not liking LEDs. They are safer then incandescent lights, especially in a warning light to the rear where reaction time is a good thing. LEDs light up 1/6 of a second faster. At 80mph if that person behind you had put his foot on the brake 1/6 second sooner, he would have stopped ~8 feet earlier.

But of course, it's your car so as long as you like it!!

Oh god, I don't mean altezza wannabes! Haha, I'm talking about clear red lenses.. Does what I said before not make sense? I don't think this would look bad by any means... It really wouldn't look much different than stock. It would mostly just look different at night. I'll see if I can photoshop something later tonight when I get home.

I'm not a huge fan of the LED tails because they just look funny on a Taurus. Newer cars can pull them off, but a 1993 Taurus.. not so much. JMO

Mostly just referenced those since their lens looks more see-through than the stockies. I don't know how else I could get see through red lenses on their short of having it custom done, and that's gotta be $$$

IMHO, I think the LED's look 10X better, brighter, and safer then the stockers. These don't look all that funny to me. . . . . . .

Those LED lamps look fantastic really. I'm not doubting how those look by any means, It's just something that would bug me if I had them on my car. I don't want my car to look different than stock other than it being lowered. That make sense? LOL

ShoSource debuted them a while ago, but then they started coming up on ebay. Personally, if I ever scrape enough money together for a set, I'm gonna get them off of ShoSource... you know, try to support the community and whatnot.

I think I ordered the 1st set to appear ever, which was on eBay. SHOSource began carrying them shortly thereafter.

I won a set on Ebay after Hamal. But I got them first  And was the first to install them!

You'll note my thread was started in March. While SHO Source's site says they added the tail lights in June. ;) Also, those are pictures of my car on the bottom of their page... .

But if I would have waited a few months I could have saved $50....

I believe he is talking about jeweled lenses... Very few/no diffusers on the lenses themselves, just the variances in the chrome reflectors behind them... Kind of like the factory 2nd gen SE jeweled headlights vs. regular SLO headlight buckets.

Why not just buy the LED ones then try to hybrid those lenses onto a stock (1157?) housing? Then you could also have LED tails with stock lenses...if everything fits both ways.

If you want a project, bake your housings apart and adapt some clear plexiglass to them. Build a wooden mold that duplicates the exterior of the existing lens and mold clear plexi to acrylic to it.

You could also just bend a piece around the body curve and leave it straight vertically instead of bubbly like the stockers. I'd buy a set of those from you for my lights.
