Just bought a used Gen III SHO

I am looking forward to getting lots of info from everyone on this website. I just bought a black 1999 SHO with only 39,000 miles. I thought it would be impossible to get one with that low of miles. It was owned by a Ford mechanic in NJ who took great care of it and only used it back and forth for work. The only modification to it is a flowmaster exhaust. I got it for $6,000 which i think is a pretty good deal for that low of mileage. Any suggestions of what needs to be done to make sure that it will last me a good long time. I can't wait to pick it up tomorrow.

As stated, get the cams welded (Check www.V8sho.com ). Make sure you take care of that tranny as well. Add aux. cooler for the time being, and put a small amount away for a rebuild later on down the road (just in case).

Aside from those two major points, they are very nice cars. Since yours is a 99, IIRC, you can get away with not using the SARC struts(or for that matter, I don't think 99's had them), which is a plus as they are somewhat expensive.

You should give Kirk at NESHO a call. I'd set aside a grand, although I think its only $700. I'd also consider having it towed there for peace of mind. I'm assuming this was the black SHO on craiglist?

Yep, go to NESHO and have it worked on. They are knowledgeable people who don't just tear the top of the motor off to weld the cams, they look for any problems too while it's apart. Although, with 39,000 miles I doubt there will be too much in need of repair.

**** yeah. For less then 7 grand, you'll have a welded 39K mile Gen III. Any other car with the same amount of mileage in or around that year would cost twice as much, be twice as slow, and probably not as comfortable.

I would check with the mechanic who owned the car,i know Ford dealers don't like even talking about welding cam sprockets,but he may have done it for his own peace of mind. If he says it was done i would still check out both heads.If they are not welded NESHO is the place to go,you will be getting your 60K maint done a bit early, mine was done at 48K just about a year ago at NESHO.You will really love this car once you have the peace of mind knowing the cams and sprockets will stick together. Just picked up the car. It is immaculate.

I found out that THE CAMS ARE ALREADY WELDED!!!!!

Nothing that needs to be done on the car.

Envy building up daily

You lucky dog!! Financial considerations forced me to sell by Red 97 recently and I'm still trying to get over it. Mine started out as a cam failed car w/117K miles on it. I replaced it with a 56K mile eng/trans and had the cams welded. I put approx 36K miles on it in just under 2 years and never had any major problems. Way nicer car than I expected having owned 2 other Gen II's previously. I predict you'll love yours for a long time to come. Hope you're never forced to sell it. What a good deal, and welcome to the forums! Post some pics of it when you get a chance.

For peace of mind, did the previous owner take pictures or anything to document the cam weld? It may be worth it for your peace of mind to make an appointment with Kirk to have a trans cooler installed, and check at least the front head to see if the cams were welded and a proper job was done.

I second the above. Unless you have documentation,like a reciept from a reputable shop. I would still do the 60K early to check both heads. I mean you really want to KNOW this has been taken care of properly.
