Hey guys, I own a 1993 MTX, I have a bad Cat and I am just pondering the thought of just removing the CATS and running straight pipes through there. I live in a state that doesn't do any emissions testing. I would like to know the pro's and con's of a set-up like this as well any opinions, links, "how-to's" and info on the O2 Sensors on a straight pipe configuration. Thanks, -C:thumb:

Pros - May give you some top end power.

Cons - Sound is generally not appealing and you may lose some low end.

Get a re-designed ypipe with high flow cats and call it a day.

I gutted my cats, my car doesnt sound bad at all, but I have 2 resonators and 2 mufflers, and i think gutted cats sounds less raspy then a straight pipe. You will notice some low end loss but to me its worth it to gain high end. Only reason i didnt get the high flow cats is because im going to be running stage 2 cams, and with their overlap iv herd there kno0wn to put some raw fuel out the exhaust and burn the cats up fast. I agree with getting a nice highflow y pipe, its the best of both worlds:thumb:

go with an equal length y-pipe and high flow cats; you will gain low and mid range torque as well as increase horsepower; a catless exhaust on a SHO motor will drive you nuts with the high pitched buzz racket, and you need to wind the motor higher to reap any of the power benefits; power down low is what these motors lack to begin with, and it is much more pleasing driving around town with it quieter and with more power down lower.
If the catted SHO Bro's high flow y is lke the Sho Shop version, the cat's can be removed and replaced with a straight pipe for the track.

One of the biggest drawbacks of going catless is the really smelly stuff that will come out of the exhaust after you shut the engine off. It isn't a big problem if you keep the car outside, but can be pretty stinky if you keep it in a garage or other enclosed area.

The high-flow catted y-pipe is by far the best way to go, unless you are going full time racing, and not using the car as a daily driver.

What are the available sources for a high-flow catted y-pipe and about how much does it cost? Are they all designed equal length and how important is that?

Bob, Shobros just did a group buy on Equal lenght pipes not too long ago. They said they might start a second group buy, when is still TBD.
FWIW, they sell a decent y-pipe for 250-ish. It's not equal length, but it is still 100% better than the stock one. The gains are probably not as high as the =length one, but still a decent bump in HP/TQ.

There was a discussion on the forum awhile ago about equal lenght y-pipes. There were some good arguments made that making the y-pipe equal length is too little to late. The real gains come from having equal lenth piping before well before the ypipe.

What are your thoughts on this or has anyone tried this? How about the idea of keeping the stock Y from the manifold and cutting both pipes off just after the O2 sensors. Then Y'ing them both with new exhaust to a dual inlet, single outlet bigger, High Flow Cat and then running it back straight piped and back to a Y to the mufflers.

Thats what i did as well. My exhaust guy, John, used a single 2 into 1 cat like that's normally used on a 360 dodge. According to the numbers, the single cat flows well over what both of the stock cats did together.

Johns a good guy cory, i think you will like him. There is a reason i drive the 50 miles to go to his shop, not the ones around here.

You guys, this exhaust set-up with the one CAT is sweeeeeeeeet!!!!:naughty: I recommend this kind of set-up to everyone! If anyone is in Mnnesota or near by, the guy's name is John and his shop is FOREST LAKE MUFFLER, phone # (651) 464-6858. John has been in the business since 1977. He elimainates all the extra pipe and bending that was previously there from the original stock set-up. No more U-Turns on this baby! I will try and take some pictures to show you guys how it looks. I do have pictures of Joe's (Whiteman 01) that I will attach which is very similar to mine. But mine's better!!! -C
