On my ford taurus sho 2011 It was driving fine the other day when all of a sudden where the mileage and MPG are displayed an oil lamp appeared. I looked at the oil level and it seems as if it was a quart low so i added a quart and the problem ceased. I did an oil change about 3K miles ago w/ the recommended full synthetic oil. today i took a drive and everything was fine no lights or anything until i got back after an hour drive and let my car sit for about 20 minutes. I went back outside to run to the store and then all of a sudden the same oil lamp indicator appeared and i checked my oil dipstick and it was low again already. I had no huge amount of smoke coming out my exhaust but I also do not have any visible oil leak so i thought most likely somehow i was burning oil. just an FYI, my turbo has already been replaced and I have had no other issues like this until this super cold weather begun. does anyone know what this could be or why my oil level keeps dropping? Please help me out!!!

When you check your oil, make sure you let the car sit and rest for at least 15-20 minutes (when the engine oil is hot) to get a proper reading.

To actually get your oil temp upto 212F, you need to drive for at least 20 minutes, or 10-15miles. Just because your coolant temp needle is at normal doesn't mean your oil is fully upto operating temp.

Anyhow, if you're actually losing oil that quickly just after an hour of driving, you might have a major oil leak somewhere that you're not aware of or you're just not waiting long enough before checking the oil.

if you keep getting the oil light, try 5w20 instead of 5w30 (which I'm assuming is what your 2011 sho takes). 5w20 is perfectly fine, and honestly better than 5w30 for our engines.

how many miles does your sho have?

It’s got about 118K miles. I rechecked the dipstick and it was about a half quart low so I think it may actually be the oil pressure sensor going bad. I looked at the oil better in the sunlight today and it was pretty dark so I went to do an oil change and the light isn’t on anymore. I’m going to continue to monitor it though and see what’s going on. It’s also really cold here in Chicago so it might be another role in the issue

My daughter had the oil light issue in her Flex, and the dealer warned of all kinds of catastrophic possibilities, hinting at an engine swap. They had just replaced the water pump and timing belts within the last year, so engine swap was NOT going to happen.

We replaced the oil pressure sensor in my garage, and she has not had the light come back in over two years.

I'd check the IC just to be sure the missing oil is not in there.

im thinking that is what i am going to do. so far i see the indicator come on sometimes, and i turn the car of and then on again, but when i start it after the indicator appears, the car cranks for longer than usual as if it is struggling, but it always starts up eventually and the oil lamp indicator disappears and i have no driving issues.
