Has anyone mounted a Nitto NT555ll 275-40-20 on a 20x8.5 wheel? I’m gonna be buying some Nitto’s but not 100% sure they fit properly on my Rovos Durban 20x8.5 wheels. If they don’t fit I may have to buy the same wheel in a 10” wide wheel. But that’s a last resort. Thank you for looking

You know I've been debating this very same idea recently. The short answer is that you can put the 275 on a 8.5" rim and get it to mount. However, it's not ideal and pulls at the sidewall likely causing the outer edges to not wear evenly. Also, because those outer edges aren't making good contact the added benefits of a wider tire may be lost, and you may lose some performance in cornering as well. So IMO is better to stick to the recommended width.

Unfortunately I haven’t seen a drag radial in a 245-45-20. Not even sure they make one. I may buy the 275-40-20 Nitto NT555ll and see how it fits and performs. If it doesn’t do well just buy 2 new Rovos wheels in 10” width for the front. I was hoping to avoid that due to the added expense.

I have done it and it fits perfect! it gives you just enough side wall bulge to not let you curb the wheel with out trying super hard and they wear just fine.

Really! Well that would be super awesome then. Means I could actually go with rims I like over rims that would work. I appreciate the feedback @76FoMoCo. My big concern was they claim 9" is minimum 9.5 would be more ideal and to push a half inch sure... but a whole inch not great

yes the tire maker like 9" min and some shops don't like to mount out side the specs but it is really a non issue. I have 2 season on the nt555r2s on all 4 and a mile of track passes too. I will go out to the shop and get some pictures for you guys, I have them off now but you will get a good idea.

275mm is 10.8 section width. But, the optimal is matching your rim width to your tread width. Since Nitto doesn't list tread width on their site, I compared some Hankook Evos. Their 275/40/20 is a 9.5" tread width, and I'll have to guess that Nitto is similar. 9" wheel is good, 8.5" is about at the edge of too small.

FWIW, on the front of my (non-SHO), I've been running 275/40/20 on 20x9.5" wheels for over two years, and it's worked very well for track handling and wear.

I looked at the same site. That's not tread width that's tire width at the sidewall. The Tire Rack site shows both in the Specs, but they don't carry Nitto. Discount Tire Direct doesn't show both, either.

I had Nitto 555 DRs in 305. They had a 12" tread width. I then got 305 Cooper Zeo RS3-S. They had just over an 11" tread width.

The 9.5 inch bracketed is the tread width. Same case as with my Nitto nt01. Except in that case it's 9 in bracketed. I found it kind of funny that they didn't mention the actual tread with the Spec's, until I noticed the bracketed number and measured myself.

The bracketed number, 9.5 in your example above, is the "measured" rim width, and is the spec width that they used to determine the other dimensions (other tire dimensions can vary, depending on the rim width). "Measured" Screenshot 20211114 142926 Firefoxis the term that Tire Rack uses. Here's an example, using the Tire Rack spec sheet for my front tires. I find it very odd that Nitto does not list Tread Width.

Actually I was going by the fact that it is indicating the optimal rim width to Tread face size. Which if looked up, says rim width should match tread face width. Which will be within a quarter inch of actual tread face width. Most common rims are manufactured in half inch increments. Unless of course they are custom or oddball rims. Please note it says approved rim widths not measured rim width from that particular instance that I posted . It matches up with what I am saying . What you posted also concurs with what you are saying and what i am saying . It just synchronized them both up. Screenshot 20211114 161839 Chrome
I kind of knew this going in but I was interested on what your response would be to all this. I find your postings most interesting and helpful. But there are other common knowledge things that are out there. Please keep posting. You have very informative insights.

One thing is that what Tire Rack calls the Measured Rim Width is the spec size that the Mfr used to get the stats. Many of the stats can change when you get away from the (designed) Measured width. Dunno if they still have it, but Tire Rack had/has an explanation of all that, which I read years ago. They always seem to have cool stuff on their webpage, without a direct link to get to it!

I found this. It seems to deal with Nitto Tires specifically.

That's a decent, but generic, chart. Not sure what their fascination with sidewall height is! In staggered combos, it's common to have one "taller" than the other, but with the same wheel and tire diameters it's irrelevant. My summer tires are 275/40/20 & 305/35/20, but I guarantee no one notices the "taller" front sidewall!

I probably mentioned it earlier, but the chart reminded me. Yeah, they look cheaper, but stay away from 555G2s!
