ATP Turbo upgrade help

Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but by upgrading the wastegate and putting in a heavier spring, you reduce turbo lag and increase maximum boost? I was told that wastegates don't have anything to do with max boost and that by upgrading to a heavier spring I would cause turbo lag. I think that's ******** and backwards

From Brad my tuner when I was discussing getting ATP turbos to him.

" I wouldn't get anything over 7 or 8 psi for wastegate spring base pressure....Some people I have tuned got 10-14 psi base springs and it's too much and the throttle tuning at part throttle is tricky."

Given this is talking about ATP turbos so not sure how it crosses over but figure I'd drop it off nobody else responds

Spring pack choice should generally be based on the control method choice, but typically the lowest boost pressure that would be desired is preferred as it is only possible to raise boost pressure with an external controller.

False. A wastegate is possibly the only component in your whole engine package that can actually be made smaller as you increase your boost/horsepower output – in certain circumstances. A wastegate is used to drive exhaust gasses away from the turbocharger to regulate turbine speeds and therefore boost pressure. Selecting the correct wastegate size depends on the amount of exhaust to be bypassed, the desired boost pressure, and the amount of exhaust gas the turbo requires to reach that boost pressure. An engine that produces a lot of exhaust gas but running low levels of boost will require lots of exhaust to be diverted away from it by the wastegate, requiring a bigger wastegate. Higher boost levels will require less exhaust to be diverted away from the turbine, so the wastegate can be smaller.

Ok, so at what point does that say anything about turbo lag and spring pressure? It doesn't. At what point does that say ANYTHING about max boost? It doesn't. OK thanks for wasting my time and thinking you know something

The wastegate dictates minimum boost pressure. Has nothing to do with max boost. Max boost is controlled by a boost controller.
