I brought a new 2016 SHO sport perfomance edition this year which I would love to take back to New Zealand with me one day (yes I'm a Kiwi). The NZ goverment has tight restrictions on importing left hand drive vehicals. Long story short , only "special" LHD vehicals can be imported . There are two criteria that the forum may be able to help me with:
  • the vehicle (or its make, model and submodel) is identified as being a collector's item in a commercially produced motoring publication
  • the vehicle's make, model and submodel has been (or was) manufactured in annual volumes of 20,000 units or less
Can anyone help me answer these two questions?

p.s. I already have a 2004 Marauder in NZ

I am fairly confident that the sub model being the SHO was produced in less than 20,000 units annually.

I say fairly confident, because I am trying to recall that I thought there may have been one model year (either the 2013 or 2014) where there may have been almost 21,000 produced.

But every other model year from 2010 to 2017 (with that noted, aforementioned exception) was definitely under 20,000 units.

I had this conversation somewhere out here before, the short answer is, Yes it's a rare car, long answer. how rare really depends on the year and color. I have a 2012 which is the last year before they made design changes so I assume they had a short production run, since they only made 1,808 total SHO's that year which I have #416 of 478 in Tuxedo Black. Someone out there has the only 2012 Kona Blue in existence which I find amazing. I was able to contact Ford and get a SHO certificate, break down of production numbers, and original window sticker. Last time I checked you could not get them for 2016 but that might have changed. I think you got a good shot but it might not be a home run.

Does anyone know of any publications in motoring magazines for the SHO, this would help?

Ford barely sells 40k Taurus's annually. SHO barely over 1k or so. Maybe 4k for the first couple of years.

Just as rare as M5's back in 2000-2003. The SHO may have well sold fewer units than BMW sold M5's at that time.

I am not sure on the numbers, I tried to find the thread where we discussed this before but no luck, I'm pretty sure since 2012 was such a short build year they made a ton more in 2013. If you get in touch with Ford Performance Group they should be able to give you what ever numbers you need. As of right now they do not have certificates for 2014 an up but maybe if you call or email they can hook you up.

2010 and 2013 were higher production than other years. There were 7592 produced in 2013.

This is based on almost no actual proof but I think the 2013 model came out early and was a long run. My 2012 car was #1651 of 1808 and was built on 01/30/2012 which means they took some time off to re-tool for the new body and updated electronics and I assume they started the 2013 later on in 2012. If anyone knows where that Kona Blue one is let me know I'll make an offer on it. I don't know what the 2016 numbers are an that is the SHO which is a Sub-Model of the Taurus, I am not sure what numbers NZ will look at but there is no doubt they are rare cars.

Trying to recall my build sheet from 2010, been a while since I looked at it, but IIRC, there 7,117 SHO's built that year.

I think we can all agree the SHO meets the second requirement, "the vehicle's make, model and submodel has been (or was) manufactured in annual volumes of 20,000 units or less." I guess the questions comes down to the 2 requirements being an "and" statement or "or" statement. IE, does it need to be a collectors item AND under 20k annual units? Or does it need to be a collectors item OR under 20k annual units?

Thanks for all the helpful replies; yes I think I can satisfy the first requirement of being under 2000 units manufactured but the NZ left hand drive import exemption requires the importer to satisfy 2 or 3 requirements; one is being a 2 door so I can forget about that, but the other requirement is that the vehical has been published in an automative magazine as a "collectors" car. If anyone can point me to any publications about the SHO that would be greatly appreciated.
