Hey Guys,

Went out to get an auto zone battery today only to get it home to find it does not fit! The bracket does not go around the extra area that they put on the battery for the handle.

I am no stranger to modifying things to fit but I don't feel like doing that. Has any one purchased a battery recently that fits the bracket?

Even the Motorcraft I recently purchased had a strap that that would not allow the bracket to fit and I had to modify.

I modified the stock hold down/bracket to work. Flattened it out on one side and re-bent it so that it fit around the battery right, instead of wedging it on.

I CUT the handele tab off the vattery

X2, It's an easy fix to just cut that nuisance handle tab off of the battery with a hacksaw. I would not cut up the hold-down; absolutely no need to do that. I did buy a battery recently, from NAPA, and I don't recall having to mod that one. It was more expensive than AZ or AA, but NAPA resets the warranty clock to zero if you ever have a warranty claim, while the others don't.

The last three NAPA batteries I bought all had to be modified to fit either an ATX or MTX car. The reinforcement area around the battery handle had to be modified slightly on the forward side.

I use Costco batteries and the standard battery holder will go around this battery bulge where the handles are located. But it is not pretty and the little threaded rods are flaring out a bit, but it still fits without any mods.

This makes the worlds' worst battery hold down system even worse, and you probably thought that was not possible.

When I took my SHO to the inspection station for a mechanical fitness analysis, they told me I had to put the correct battery and battery box in the car, as that one looked pretty much home-made. They were in shock when they learned the truth.

How many times have you had to retrieve those threaded rods, after they fall over and disappear.

Yep. I had bought two batteries for both 89s, and cutting off the strap crap made them work fine.

Sure we can cut it but not one person has found a battery today that will fit with out modification? That just sounds crazy.

I do like hearing about the napa warranty reset.

I bought an Auto Value battery and it has a small fold out handle on the top, and I didn't need to modify the battery or the hold down to make it work! :)

I'm tellin ya, just make the hold down fit the battery. Or get another one if you don't want to modify the original. FWIW the NAPA battery I just put in my car fits better than the Johnson Controls batteries that are sold by most stores.
