I just paid for, and will pick up a 1991 SHO Plus in the next week, or so. My first car was a 1991 Taurus, just the plain one, nothing fancy. I have always been a fan of the SHO, and have been considering buying one for the last few years. Pulled the trigger last night. I don't have photos, yet, but it is a project. Hasn't run in over a year. Owner said he stopped driving because the AC stopped working. He has a pile of receipts for the 22 years of his ownership. It is high mileage (209k) and the paint is faded, and the seat are a bit worn, but I'm happy with it.

I'm a Subaru and VW guy. I have owned multiple air-cooled VW's and have owned the same 2003 WRX twice. As soon as I get the SHO home, I'll bring the maintenance up to schedule, handle an oil leak, and get her back on the road. After that I'll look into the AC issues, and maybe tackle the cosmetic issues.

I have been browsing the forum for the last week, and will start researching maintenance. I figure I will pull the intake to clean, inspect the valve cover gaskets, cam seals, etc, and check the valve lashing. I will also inspect the timing belt (it is a belt, correct?) and replace what is needed.

I learned the ins and outs of forum protocol on NASIOC which is a huge Subaru forum filled with tons of knowledge and as much or more whiney kids without a clue. But on every forum there is a group of good guys with butt loads of knowledge, so I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.

Where are you guys buying your basic maintenance parts? I spend a lot of time at O'Reilly's near my house, and have some experience with Rock Auto. I guess I'm curious if your FLAPS are able to get what you need, or if you have to use the internet.

Thanks guys,

Jason

Welcome, what color is the car, any pictures. I've been able to find parts either on Rockauto, ebay, Shosource, Napa, Amazon, or just posting a wanted to buy section on this forum. There is a ton of information here and well as a great knowledge base from the members. Seems like every issue that has come up has been resolved by just doing a couple searches.

Glad you could score a 91+! Def post pics when you can :) Parts generally came from internet purchases, "minor" parts from auto parts stores (spark plugs, cam seals, etc.), a few direct from Ford/dealerships. I think now though, posting in the Wanted to Buy section or finding a sizeable local junkyard is probably a better way to go. If you figure out which parts interchange with other Ford models/lower Taurii trims, you exponentially increase chances of getting a good replacement.

Welcome Jason, Yea, this crowd is different than Nasioc, not many kids with the old or newer SHO's. I honestly think this is the coolest it's been here because of that. My daily is a 05 LGT wagon, I spend more time here and Legacy Forum.

Hey, guys. Sorry for the delayed response. I pick the car up tomorrow morning. It is red with black leather. It does have the correct hood!! I'll post some picks tomorrow. I'm excited to get started. What is a good service manual for these cars? I have read that the Helm service manual is good to have. Any tips on where I can acquire one? Is the Chilton/Haynes worth buying? I have a pdf for my Subaru of the original FSM and I love it. I would love to have that for this car, if there are any sources.

I have checked out the local salvage yards and the websites show some early 90's Taurus's (or Taurii?!) I will make a list and hit the yards in the next few weeks.

I'll have photos tomorrow!!

Welcome to the SHO. I smiled to myself when you wrote that 209K was high mileage. For a properly maintained SHO engine, that is only near the end of the break-in period.

I had assembled a spreadsheet of the usual parts for sources and prices, but the O'Reilly, AutoZone, RockAuto names were the key contributors. I have not had to perform maintenance as often since the SHO is not my daily driver, so my list is in need of updating.

I have a Word doc, step-by-step procedure and valve gapping worksheet for the upper engine service (valve gapping, valve cover gaskets, etc.), that has much more detail and experience included than the service manuals. If you sent me a private mail, I will respond with the documents. The front engine service (timing belt, water pump, front main oil seal, etc.) was covered by a procedure published in an old SHO Times magazine and reprinted in the Forum.

The Helms manual is more detailed, but also more costly. I have found the Chilton manual to be quite helpful on the basic Taurus repairs such as suspension as well as SHO-specific tasks.

Again, welcome. You will find a huge quantity of very helpful SHO info here. There is a significant number of very serious mechanics here as well.

sdpatt, Thanks for the offer. I think I correctly sent a PM to you.

Everyone else, thanks for the words of encouragement. I am excited to drive it, and after reading a lot on this forum, I am no longer worried about the mileage.

I have not been working on the car recently due to desperately needing to paint my house. I should be able to get to it in early June. I plan to fix the badly leaking oil pan, and handle the valve adjustment. There are receipts for the timing and water pump, but no mention of the valves. I figure better safe than sorry. I read a few things about changing the connecting rod bearings, so I picked up a set at Rock Auto. I will inspect before I do this, but from what I am reading it is recommended every 120,000 to 150,000. What do you high mileage guys say?

I will daily this car after I finish the important stuff: maintenance, A/C, new stereo. I travel about 20,000 miles a year for work, so I figure I can enjoy this for a few years with no issue.

Pics are below, and I will update when I get things rolling.

On a side note, there is a second gen (1994) SHO at the local yard. Is there anything I should grab? EATC is shot. Seats are shot. Body is okay. I did grab a "round button" EATC from a Lincoln and plan to swap the face following the write up on here.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the support.

Welcome to the forum - Glad to have another SHO owner in the family!

Loved my '91 - bought it with 85k miles and sold it with 190k on it. The next owner ran it to well over 200k so as mentioned here before - These cars can run well into the high mileage with proper care and a little love!

Welcome! In the middle of my SHOs, I bought a new 05 Legacy GT 5=speed wagon that I ran at SHO Convention track events from 2005 through 2010, and modded with suspension upgrades and a Cobb tune. Tommy Ochal (SHOCH here on the forum) owns it now. All fun track cars.
