How do you really remove the rear bolt on the power steering pump?

I have read all the threads. I have tried almost everything. The intake is off (upper 60k), I have tied up the wiring to get it out of the way. Both ends of a straight combo wrench are futile. I can’t find a wobble extension that gives enough of an angle to seat the socket. The gear wrench doesn’t have enough room to get anything done. There doesn’t seem to be any room approaching from the top or bottom.

What is the black canister right behind that? Will removing that help?

Anybody have any ideas that may have not been posted? I have spent so many hours on this one bolt and I am at my wits end.

Thanks!

it is a royal pita. iirc, I ended up laying on top of the engine with all the extensions I had put together to get the ratchet far enough out so it would turn far enough that I could actually get the bolt out.
and of course, the bolt is way longer than it needs to be, so you have to turn it about 40 turns to get it out...

I use a long 1/4 locking extension with a SnapOn swivel socket. Have no problems getting that bolt out.

That black canister behind it is the AC accumulator. Sounds like you have an ATX.

I've only removed the PS pump from its bracket when I removed it along with the engine out of the car...

I tried the Snap-On wobble extension. Best wobble extension I have, but I wasn’t able to get it to work in this situation. I was finally able to get it with an extra-long ratcheting wrench. The length was the key to get the leverage needed to pop it loose (and maybe the second health dose of liquid wrench).

I believe I was able to get at it with a standard sized wrench but I also fondly remember it breaking loose and staying loose which caused me to crush a couple fingers on the intake.

What rubydist said. That was how I changed my PS pump on my 94. It took a while, but it seemed like the only way to get to that last bolt. Then used a stubby 7/16" wrench to get the PS line off the pump.

That brought me back memories when a friend and I changed the PS pump on my car. Like you say, I literaly had to lay on top of the engine but to reconnect the high pressure line to the PS pump. There was no other way around to do it.
Besides the canister there are a bunch of harness wires back there which my friend had to move aside with a rope while I tried to screw the line back in.

Next day my hands and arms were all scratched up... but that comes standard when owning a SHO ;)

My 1992 factory service manual says to get it from the bottom. I dont remember the exact explanation. I recently did it and got it by prying on a gear wrench. I didnt read the fsm until i was done.

I'm having a **** of a time getting the rear hard line off the pump. Seems like it is 18mm; I've got an 18mm flare fitting wrench coming, hopefully that does the trick.

Still no luck getting the high pressure line off, so I ordered a replacement and will just r&r it with the pump. The last "mechanic" that worked on it pretty well rounded off the fitting.
