Greetings to all the friendly folk who are on here! I just wanted to thank everyone who offers their knowledge on here in hopes that a fellow owner of these wonderful cars may understand/enjoy them for many years to come! :thankyou: Anyways, after having to deal with embarrassing smoke bellowing out from under the hood, and puddles of oil every night ever since I purchased the car! I decided it's time for the Front 60K, I just previously did the upper tune-up a few months ago, and that went well enough for me to have the courage to start digging in... So, I just got this new phone and I am very happy to finally share some pics of this process here as I go, so enjoy!

Looking good. Keep at it, and in no time you will have the cofidence/knowledge to rebuild/redo the whole thing.

Very expensive indeed! But not terrible and certainly worth it for me, I love the fuel mileage. Im not crazy about the rust that is starting as you can see, the sunroof has rotted through terribly like I have never seen before (I'll have to get some pics of that!). Thankfully I can deal with most of it on the subframe at the same time as this tune-up, as for the sunroof Im not worried with it for now... I think I need to replace a motor mount too, because I seem to notice quite a bit of engine movement especially in Reverse....

P.S. The trunk is the best storage place for parts!!!

lol

your gas mileage will be even better after you take 100 lbs of parts out of the trunk.

First, practice with sandbags, then move on to the real thing: parts!

Yeah mine looks like its been pulling a trailer or something with the way it squats all the time! But with my budget its going to take time for everything to come together nicely. The exhaust is certainly next on my list, along with the motor mounts, etc.... I had it on the lift a few weeks ago to temporarily cover-up some rot on the floors, when I saw that most all of the suspension parts need replacement. One can't help but ask the question "What does not need replacement?!!"

Totally understand where your coming from. Im on my 3rd SHO and this one was the most neglected. Finally after taking car of the motor its on to struts, mine has the sag ass syndrome as well. damn budgets. Have fun with it and take care of that motor first off or youll be sorry down the road.

Yeah, the engine is what I always start with and work my way through to the rest. Does this look like the beginnings of crank cancer???

no, that looks typical. clean all that up, put some never-seize on it, and you will be good to go.

If youve got the time/Fuq the rust.. knowledge /attention span then repair it. If not, worry about the drivetrain. Its not hard at all to swap a good running drivetrain/suspension etc into a cleaner SHO should you find one down the road with say a spun bearing or blown tranny. (Im on my 5th sho now.. getting nicer as I go body wise)

Good on ya taking care of the mechanical maintainence first. The first time tearing these down can be intimidating but its fairly straight forward and its pretty hard to **** up.

It is coming together nicely now after some minor timing cover misery, (its nice not having that oil leaking constantly in the front anymore!) I was surprised to have no trouble getting the crank timing sprocket back on, and after rotating the engine by hand to check the timing belt tension throughout the travel, I remembered the old belt was kinda loose with about 1in. slack, so I put the new one to about 1/2in. or less of slack so its a bit tighter but I was careful not to over-tighten. The damper slid on easily too but I left it kinda off so as I can fit the rear acc. belt on there. I decided to put a light coating of grease on the keyway, the crank timing sprocket, and the damper just to keep that crank lubed and hopefully prevent that dreadful rust on that keyway. I quite agree that these engines are perfect for swaping into either another SHO, or conceivably something RWD! (any good candidates for a rwd swap?). But for now I think I got lucky cause most of the rust was just surface rot and came off easily with the wire wheel. I'm just gonna throw some POR-15 on it and not worry about it. Where having a heatwave here in Illinois and it is a real steamy, hazy one at that!! :sun:

So as if I couldn't decide on anything else to mess with now (ya rite!) I've decided both front and rear motor mounts are definitely shot. I'm guessing it has something to do with my right foot!! But after twenty years, I can appreciate they're need for replacement!
(along with everything else!!). So since its already mostly apart, and I can already feel a headache coming on! How bad could it be? :swing:

Claw, where in Illinois are you parked? I grew up in Kewanee. Moved out west after college and been here ever since.

Yes there are some very interesting swaps for these motors - check out mine. You have to get down to the bottom of the first page before the project starts, but I continue to use the thread to track my progress.

Another note. The guys here turned me on to shospeed-dot-com which you can use to upload pictures, then link to them here. Saves adding the tiny attachments.

Welcome to the madness!

I live near Joliet, IL... Thats a cool swap, and looks fun! I have been wanting to find a newer style one similar to that with the V8, but I can't find one without a million miles on it.
