^Will these specs fit correctly including the rear on a 1990 SHO? And if so, will 225's fit okay?

Yes. But IMO stay with the 215. Fits the rim perfectly, and the extra width won't buy you anything.

My Elbrus wheels are 17x7.5", with a 45mm offset, with 215/50/17 Evo V12 tires:

I know they have already been shown but I have more info on the wheels and I have "restored" them a little.

7.5" width is still in the recommended range of a 225/45 or even a 235/45.

It's the "allowable" range, but not the optimal range. A 215 sits nice & square with a 7.5" rim.

This is what I ran on the LGT, and now on the '89. Perfect for the track, and after ~10K miles, the tires wear perfectly, steering response is crisp, and it worked GREAT on the track.

Other than for "looks", there's no reason to go wider. And a 225 doesn't add enough to the looks department to matter, IMO.

I had 4 sets of rims on the LGT, two were 17x7", the other two were 17x7.5". ran all with 215/45/17 tires. The difference in response was NOTICEABLE with the 7.5" rims.

I understand you've had good luck with the narrower tires, however, I had great luck with wider tires (235/45/17 on 7" width) and that is also with track use. That was a bit on the edge of what I'd run, but I was taking the turns just as fast as the much better balanced cars on track. I prefer overall grip over response as that time and reaction can be learned. Getting a tire with a stiffer sidewall will go a long way as well.

Generally, the "allowable" you mention is well within "optimum" range as we've seen people use a wide variety of sizes on things (stretched and the like).

Matching the tread width to the rim stiffens the sidewall.....as in a 215 on a 7.5" rim.

You lose overall grip with a wider tread when the sidewalls are bent inward. When the only guys in front of me on the track are those with track rubber, it has worked well for me.

You have to experiment a bunch with tire pressures to get a too-wide tire to work with a narrower rim. I learned long ago that a 225 tire on a 6" slicer SUCKS. running 50 hot psi and the tires still rolled. NEVER have had an issue since with 215s on a 7.5".

Oh dang, you said aftermarket, sorry.

Here you go:

Tim, they are Sport Edition EP3 wheels if I'm remembering 7 years ago when I had a set on my g3 sable.....
:dribble: @ the fikse's

And I can tell you from experience that 235/40r17 star specs are too wide for anything narrower than 8" wide wheels.......thats about all I can say though.....:laugh_ti:

You act as if we're/I'm talking about fitting a 275 on a 7" wheel. Within the range I am talking about, you're increasing overall grip while trading off response. I don't know why, but you seem to be the only one who's figured this out on the forum (remember, everything is within reason).

Maybe you should give yourself some more credit on driving if the only reason you're passing cars is because of your narrow tires. NEVER had an issue with a 235/45/17 on a 7" wheel... In fact, I was quite fast on track.

There's also autocross speeds versus track speeds. You will get more tire deformation and loss of contact patch at higher tracks speeds.

BTDT with the 225-on-a-6"-slicer stupidity on the track with a few of the SHOs (three of them, actually). Getting into the LGT, tire pressures weren't as critical, traction was better at the edge of cornering, and tire wear was very consistent. Just the unintentional experiment of going from 7" to 7.5", back to 7", then to 7.5" was instructive for feel.

Most of the folks here only do street driving. Put a damn 275 on a slicer for all I care! If you want the optimal performance from your tires, there is an ideal combo, which falls into the "range" that TR & others recommend.

The factory setups take a lot of things into consideration, and ride comfort ranks ahead of cornering and steering crispness from what I've seen.

Yes, very close. There are some stick-on wheel weights on the ID of the wheel that actually cleared the caliper too. I was amazed. Probably only a mm or two of clearance.

A couple of the wheels have quite a bit of curb damage and one needs to have the lug holes repaired. I'm trying to decide whether I want to have them repaired or sell them as-is. I've never seen them on a SHO, so it's tough to let them go.

One thing I noticed, when it comes to wheel and tire widths, is that every single wheel marketed as a 7/7.5/8/8.5 wide wheel is always EXACTLY the claimed width.

And every 215/225/235/245 tire from every manufacturer, regardless of aspect ratio, or overall diameter, is always EXACTLY the same width. So no matter what, there is always EXACTLY one size tread width that works better than any other tread width for a given wheel width. Aint that cool?
