tires are 235/45/r17, if the stock size is 215/60/r16 then my overal radius is very close to stock, if the stock size is 215/55/r16 then these read 4% slower.

Eitherway, I pumped such 93 (10% ethanol :|) and mileage jumped, looking @ about 28mpg's now.

Hopefully I can improve that number with a catted y-pipe and a newer exhaust. I also am going to re-gap the spark plugs soon.

Thanks,
Josh

Some important things of note:

-Ethanol will lower your MPGs.

-You'll see more MPGs using 87 than you will with 91, 93, etc.

I'll agree that I hate ethanol! BUT my sho disagrees with your second statements. I am seeing dramatic difference running 93 octane. My timing is right, the 60k maintenance isn't due yet. I've also noticed that the car has better mid range pickup. I Do not believe this car has an LPM but it sure acts like it. Turd.

Open the glovebox, pinch in the two stops, swing the box down and shine a light up in there. You'll know for sure if there's an LPM attached in less than five minutes.

I got 21.6 mpg combined city/hwy on my 89 during the last fill up. I put my foot in it a few times; but otherwise drove moderately. Most of that was hwy miles. I got 282 miles to a tank and put 13 gal. in (right when the fuel light 5 gallon warning comes on).

I recently put in a new t-stat, top/front 60k (including plugs and wires), cleaned the intake manifold manually by removing it and scrubbing it out, and I have a K&N filter. Had I filled up and drove straight highway with the cruise set at 75, I could have easily achieved 28-30mpg.

I think that's about as good as I can get out of the car.

I don't get good gas mileage, but I never really drove this car for good gas mileage. That's what I use my boring (but reliable!) '04 Impala for.

And look at how old our cars are. JRA2000, 28-30 mpg isnt bad at all. Look at the car advertisements on tv. Isnt Mike Row on the Ford commercials claiming low 30's for gas mileage on new cars? WTF, what ever happened to two speed rear-ends or crazy overdrives like I had on my old Studebaker. My 66 Mustang had a 2.88 gear ratio in it from Ford, I could drive forever on a tank of gas with a 289. However it was like SHO not much from light to light, but get her on the highway and cruise. Just my 2 cents. Oh, almost forgot my SHO's gettin around 27 mpg.

BTW i run premium...(almost always) :O

No need for that unless you have higher-than-stock compression.

wjayg, 18 mpg sounds low to me, even for strictly city driving. Although the warm-ups maybe be affecting that number if you do it every day.

When I "drive it like I stole it" I get about 16 in town

When I drive it like an old man up the mountain and back I get 28 mpg

In the exact same cycle (in town driving, 10 miles to, then 10 miles from work) I get about 17 mpg. If I pulse glide it I get 20 mpg. These are winter numbers, they get 1-2 mpg better in the summer.

Based on the original EPA city estimate I don't think this is far off.

One other thing to consider is that the ground path for the O2s on the MTX cars is through the H pipe and exhaust manfiolds, and after 15 to 20 years that added resistance will be richening fuel mixture . . . as will the use of anything other than Motorcraft O2 sensors (my opinion FWIW)

Huh. I guess I just don't have much experience with strictly city driving. My mileage rarely drops below 22-23, but 10 of the 16 miles of my commute are highway.
