Now THAT is how the SHO should've sounded stock LOL.

I'm with Tim, at idle it sounds like a Yamaha, and when you rev it it sounds similar to a Turbo Duratec a la Noble M500

Regarding the idle too, it's really only loud on initial start up. If the engine is fully warmed up you can hardly even hear it at idle unless of course your rev it up. Overall once the engine is warm it only gets loud if you get on the gas.

Qsilver - your SHO sounds GREAT. Can you give a specific list of what you did? Based on your posts I THINK I have an idea, but a specific "Here is what I did to my exhaust" would be MUCH appreciated!!!!!

Thanks!

This is exactly what I did. All 2.5' piping. Replaced the 3rd cat (it's right after the bolt connections to the flex pipe) with a X Pipe. Then from there it's just straight mandrel bent pipe going out to each tip. The stock pipe after the 3rd cat consisted of a mid muffler then the two rear mufflers which were all deleted. Hope this clears it up.

Originally I had planned on just deleting the 3rd cat and putting the X pipe in it's place, deleting the mid muffler but keeping the rear mufflers. When we slid the mufflers on the rear pipes it was just to quiet still. Could kind of hear the turbos but it wasn't pronounced like in Steve's videos for whatever reason ( I used dynomax mufflers like him...maybe a different model but not sure). We took them off and WOW it sounded good. So I opted to go with no rear mufflers and just straight pipes!

Got some miles on it now and it's still silent cruising on the highway. It drones a little at 2k rpm though but it doesn't bother us to much at all. Installing our Livernois tune tomorrow so we'll see how it changes the exhaust note if at all.

I have not yet viewed videos due to trolling on my phone. Did you obtain any gain in performance? HP, torque, throttle response, lag, spool?

sure he gained some performance if the SHO uses the same rear mufflers as the Flex.

Ok... this is not meant to be 100% accurate. This is not the right way to do it... but it is the best I have. Put my Flex on the Livernois dyno after putting on my MRT axle back. Unfortunately I did NOT have a good baseline for my Flex. HOWEVER, Rick was kind enough to let me use the Livernois baseline for comparison! Thanks again, Rick! Again, not perfect... different vehicles, on different days, but same dyno. That being said, i think it is a fairly good comparison, since the two vehicles performed almost identical until about 4500 RPM where they started to diverge... which makes sense, if you believe that I uncorked my Flex...

So here is my graphs... Here is the HP graph. Mine is the BLUE. Livernois is RED. Both on the stock tune. Mine has the MRT axle back system.

Now the Torque. Again, very similar until about 4500 RPM:

Again... i make no claims as to gains... I know this is not the ideal comparison... but i do believe it illustrates just how restrictive the rear mufflers are, at least in the Flex... Not sure about the SHO since I've never heard a STOCK one! LOL

When I got rid of the 3rd cat & mid-muffler, that alone showed up with higher boost average numbers. So, contrary to just being"NOISE FLUFF" it seems to have at least a slight increase in power. BUT WHO CARES... happy with it if it is only FLUFF!

I definitely think we gained some power. Not a ton and nothing that made a huge difference though. With the stage 2 tune on now the car just hauls ass compared to before. I'm shocked how much power it has now compared to before. I'm sure the ehxaust is helping though too!

Interesting... What's the length difference between the two banks by the time they join at the x-pipe?

It sounds like a Gen 1/2 SHO without the RASSSSP and secondaries.

Sick! I want to do custom exhaust as well...by any chance do you know the measurements of the mufflers you used?

I used Magnaflows. Believe there is a thread somewhere as to the exact #s... Try a search. Paid about $300. from a local muffler shop... Got the satin SS Magnaflows and used the stock tips. Then went home and painted the mufflers flat black to make them look like factory. Polished Magnaflows are abour $50. more a pair.

In my case I opted not to put any performance mufflers in replacement of the stock mufflers. It's just a X pipe in replacement of the 3rd cat and then straight 2.5 inch pipe the rest of the way back. ;)
