Another prus juan for COP being reliable.

The coils on my SHO are all original Motorcraft coils except 1. Car has 159,000 miles on it and they are just now starting to show signs of being slightly weak on their output.

How many times do the v6 SHO guys recommend replacing your plugs AND wires in a 160,000 mile span? Probably more than just once and wires arent exactly a dime a dozen.

The correct e-bay coils aren't from China. I can't remember the sellers name off the top of my head, but I know they're located in Ontario CA and they've been selling the same coils through the same manufacturer for about 4 years now.

I've got 4K+ on mine without any issues.

alanisdeals on ebay. I just bought a set a couple days ago...

They are listed as Standard Motor Products brand...which are sold on rockauto for $100 a piece. I bought the set of 8 from alanisdeals for $129. Even if half the coils are good, it's still a **** of a deal.

Yes, I would like to hear what you think after you have them in for a month or two, Nick. I am still running the ones that came with the car when it is new and so far no problems, but that cannot go on forever.

Standard Motor Products have been pretty decent components from what I purchased in the past, very strong/durable design. Sure they have parts warranty as well. This is probably the best alternative. Adapting components is hard to compete with that price $129.00

You are correct, they are competitive. But we are not just talking about price either. We also are seeing how good reliability is with the Accel coil as well, mostly due to friction and heat. The Accel coil does not have mounting screws, but we'll see if that affects it in any way soon enough. The only modifications required on the Accel coil are cutting the boot shorter (everyone has a pair of scissors right?) and adjusting the metal spring as well, which, depending on how hack you want to be, could be done with a pair of scissors as well, or as the original poster said, he just used the spring from one of his old coils.

Sounds solid to me. If the GT-500 doesn't have mounting brackets.. then I don't see why would need ones either.. if the COP can be put up to that type of vibration that is.

You need to trim the coiled wire in the new coil. There are molded into the bottom on the coil. I used a pair of side cutters, ***** etc. to trim down the wire. As for the boot you can remove the boot off the Motorcraft or the what COP you have in, this was you get the right length without guessing. Sorry if I didnt explain this better.

Also, You can purchase boots seperate in packs of 3 for $2.99 and just snap them on the new coils. No cutting needed...

Ah, that's interesting, although $1 per boot or u could easily just cut off the bottom for free (or as Bam said.. just use a boot from another old COP)

Has the Ford coil changed much from say our 96 SHO to the 10+ Mustang/focus/other vehicles?

I'm sure it's changed, but only slightly, there is only so much you can improve on an already simple design.

The newer coils probably resist changes in temperature a lot better. Heat isn't necessarily the enemy in COP design, but changes in temperature are.

I'm surprised to see that nearly all the ford vehicles that I see in service are all cop design so ford must have decided that was the better way to go. Has anyone checked to see if the coils off any of the other ford vehicles will work. Is the voltage different on different coils or is the plug different or both. Most cop that I see have mounting holes in them I'm sure if we found one with atleast one mount instead of two that would still be better than none.

Ian and Ryan and a bunch of other guys started testing out different Ford COP coils years ago, this really isn't new other than more manufactures making coils now.

Bottom line is that any Ford or aftermarket coil that has the same core shape and connector will work as long as the correct boot and spring are transferred to them. As some have mentioned in this thread, it's securing them that becomes the challenge although I've seen a number of cars where they were just left floating there and seemed to stay in place just fine.

Up until about 2007 or 2008, the only company making Ford coils was Wells. If they had a Motorcraft label, Standard label, Echlin label, Duralast label, etc. they all still came from a single source. In fact for a long time if you bought a Standard or NAPA coil, when you opened the box they often had Motorcraft labels on them. Now of course there are other companies making them, but I'd still bet there's under 5 sources.

FWIW, I bought a set of 10 of the yellow Rally DG508 coils for $100 for my Super Duty on eBay a year ago and have put about 45K miles on them without a hiccup. Prior to that, I replaced two failed OE Ford coils with V8 SHO coils and just swapped the longer boots and springs over and they worked fine so the opposite will work also.

From my experience, the main different between COP designs is not the internals or the voltages associated with them, but the "shell" to fit different applications; so if you could modify a certain COP enough, you most likely could make it fit into your vehicle.

COP's are better for many reasons, but one of the major reasons is you can just simply replace one coil if one is faulty, rather than a whole coil pack which *could be* more expensive.

I wish I took pics. I've been running '99 Cobra coils since... whenever I posted that I bought them. I don't remember. They shipped 5 of one part #, 2 of another, and 1 of another. I don't remember the #'s, but the 5 were black stickers, the 2 were green, and the 1 was purple. All work fine. I just cut the springs and re-used the boots from the old coils because the new boots wouldn't fit securely if cut. Idles smooth and drives excellent.

I am currently running the ebay coils in my sho also.....without a problem. I kept my old ones just incase I did need them but so far no problems. and considering the car has well over 100k on it I am sure it was time for a tune up. Mileage has picked up and lost that noticable miss that I had also.
