I rode out the storm at home. The tornadoes passed about 10 miles to my south. Then, a huge cell popped up in northern MA, heading for my brother's place. I hopped in my Town car and raced N to see the cell and make sure my brother was OK. Got up almost to Leominster, heard they were OK, and took 117 E to try to catch up with the cell.

Up I-190 and then down 117, the skies were amazing. Much like you'd see before a tornado outbreak on Stormchasers. Black, black clouds with almost sunshine behind it, leaving a deep yellow sky.

I took 117 to I-495 and headed back towards Worcester. Stopped for gas and then watched a wall of constant lightning come my way. When 2 struck within 1/4 mile, I took off for the highway. I then got swamped by this cell that just dropped lightning non-stop. It was hitting all around me and the rain was insane. I was screaming with every strike. I've seen lightning as vivid, just not nearly as concentrated. Then, there was a strike on the metal barrier lining the breakdown lane 50 ft to my right. A flash so concentrated, just like a welder welding and then a blinding light. You could hear a sizzle, crack and then BOOM! I've never been so scared.

The storm was so bad, I passed my exit and kept heading north to get out of the whole storm. About 10 miles north of me, I turned around and headed back home. By then, all the lightning was cloud to cloud.

Kirk has been posting on facebook.

I took a break at work and the scanner app on my phone had an alert that said like 2000 people were listening to the Springfield MA scanner. I listened for a minute and they said something about a touch down.

Riveting tale, chap!

...seriously. Wow. We lucked out up here. I was in Lowell when that cell in northern MA passed by. It dove south just before/as it got to my area, so we didn't get much of anything from it, other than the coolest lightning show I've ever seen. I was itching to go out and chase the cell like you did, but I was too nervous with all the hail reports.

Bill (95GOOSE) lives out in the Springfield area. I hope he's OK.

Glad you guys and families are OK. Just saw some of the damage from Springfield on the national news, just wow. You dont see tornados in the northeast much. This year has been so goofy, what did we do to **** Mother Nature off.

All good in the greater Boston area. Other than dark skies and a couple strong thunderstorm cells it was uneventful around here.

Kirk was probably closest to one of the areas in central MA that got hit, but it sounds like a power outage was the worst he had to deal with.

As Fro mentioned, Bill D. out in W. Springfield is the only other one I can think of that could have been in close proximity to the damage. Hopefully he'll chime in here soon since I don't seem to have his phone number anymore.

That video shows it crossing the Connecticut River right at the Memorial Bridge in Springfield... that's like 6 miles from my brother's house in Suffield, CT. Scary.

Matt, Chris - Thanks for your concern. The tornado formed up just west of me, and travelled east about a half mile from my house. No damage in my neighborhood, but parts of W Springfield were hit pretty hard. Two people were killed in town; one, while sitting in his car, was crushed by a falling tree, and the other was a woman who covered her daughter to protect her. So tragic.
It crossed the river into Springfield at the Memorial Bridge (flipping a semi). The south end of Spfld was also hit pretty hard. I don't think there have been any deaths reported. My mother lives about a mile from its path in Spfld. No damage to her area, but electricity is still out. I tried to get over there this morning, but was unable to make it. Most roads were for emergencies only. She told me not to worry about her; she's a tough 93 years young! Ha!
I just got back from Cali 2 days ago. Perfect timing.
Hope to see you soon,
Bill

Yeah def some scary stuff, especially when your not used to it like us up here. These were prob some of the most amazing storms i have seen. Thank god didn't get too much out this way but did get caught on the hwy in a hail storm which brought the traffic to a near halt. The real sad part of all this is not only the damage and loss of life, but the actual reports of people looting in Springfield. That's just sickening.....

It was about 20 minutes south of me-however it passed right by my mother's work and she had JUST gotten home-thank goodness. I was visiting good ol' Belchertown - perfect weather. The sky was green and there was some swirling of clouds in my neighborhood right before 8PM...I was in the basement for a good half hour. Scary stuff....
