Well, if you move from Atlanta to Denver, get a new tune.....

I'm currently sitting 140 feet above sea level. It's about 2-3 hours from here to Tahoe which has some very fun and beautiful roads which would put me at over 6000 feet above sea level. I don't think a boosted SHO that couldn't account for variances in barometric pressure would be very happy. Especially considering the changes in weather conditions from one side of the range to the other.
IMO, this is BS. Get the car set....it's set......if you life is that much in flux where you move across the country once a year, do something different.

I've lived in three states in the last year. Should I find a different job? Granted I'll be here for three years but it would still average out to a move a year...

I got it now. His setup i pretty much for summer night runs or something, and that's it. not really for any day driving. That's why he told me to bring my own tune.

I agree. Do you not also agree that it is a good thing to leave the computer calibration stock when possible? Would you recommend leaving the MAF stock on a forced induction SHO, because with 'proper tuning' you can make it work.

For me.....yes.

If you want to tune to the ragged edge, do something different.

For something that I actually drive on a daily, or semi-daily basis (like cross-country for a SHO Convention.....BTDT many times) it isn't going to be "on the edge". If your tune can't handle driving cross-country, IMO you ain't doing it right.

Carbs worked fine for many years with the crude tuning on modded engines. Life is not that difficult.

Tuning isn't done to run it on edge. Tuning is used to make the boost you added work. Without tuning, you won't get away with boost at more than a couple PSI.

For something that I actually drive on a daily, or semi-daily basis (like cross-country for a SHO Convention.....BTDT many times) it isn't going to be "on the edge". If your tune can't handle driving cross-country, IMO you ain't doing it right.

Carbs worked fine for many years with the crude tuning on modded engines. Life is not that difficult.

Which is why adaptive should not be disabled.

I am not sure I understand you. You say you would use the stock 55 MAF, that is at it's 'ragged edge' by 300hp, on a forced induction SHO? Or that you would leave the stock computer tuning alone when you can (which you have been arguing against thus far in this thread)?

And it is cross-country driving we are talking about, something that a car whose fuel trimming has been disabled will have issues doing. My turbo SHO, I drove in 115F heat across the country, through Death Valley and the Sierra Nevada's, through the streets of SanFran, and on the track at Thunderhill. And it was far from on the edge, which is why that engine, which I used for 50+k turbocharged miles, has lived on through another member's turbo SHO and is seeing new life in a turboSHO powered Cobra.

If you guys are happy with your tuning now, good for you.

Up until a couple of years ago, tuning was a clusterfuch, which is why I mentioned that Kurt Metros tuning on his blower car was the ONLY turn-key dependable setup since the mid-'90s when blowers first hit the scene.

Sure, on a blower or turbo car a bigger MAF is of benefit. After many personal iterations of bolt-on stage parts, the 55 stock mAF is just fine, and IMO more desirable, since it works better.

Bigger is NOT always better. You have to be smart about it.

For myself, I'm done with any SHO power mods. BTDT. I would never do a forced induction system, and anything less than that is, IMO, a waste of money.

But then, SHOs for me aren't what they used to be. For a serious driver, there are too many good stock drivers out there that will blow the doors off SHOs. It's time has come & gone. Appreciate them for what they were.

As it is with most old enthusiast cars.

yeah, I found out early on that just a y-pipe and UDPs gave me more gain than anything I did after that.

But.....we are talking maybe 2 tenths in the quarter to get close the 15-flat. Better off buying one of the hot Gen 2s that got to 14.6x STOCK.

I am comitted to SHOs, but to pretend that they are performance-relevant anymore is dreaming. $$$ matter to me now, and there are too many more options available to satisfy me for a lot less $$$.

I would have no reservations that with a good driver behind the wheel my car could keep up with some world class performers... Actually, I know for a fact it can as the previous owner proved that weekend after weekend at Watkins Glenn.

Any my "Hot Gen 2" (95 MTX) ran a 14.7@95 with nothing but a Y-Pipe, CONSISTENTLY. There was also my Full option white 92 that ran a 14.8@95 with again, Only a Y-Pipe. It's not hard to do.

Well, it IS hard to do.

By all measures, an '89 "should" be the quickest, but from what I have personally seen, some Gen 2s have mid 14-second capability. Takes the right car, with a good driver.

Many stock cars can better a stock SHO on a road course. Because a suspension-modified SHO does well says more for the driver than the car.....

Let's face it, FWD sucks. It was a bad idea for anything over 100 HP econboxes.

I can tell you from experience that a stock 55mm Maf belongs on no boosted SHO. It is maxed by 5,000rpms with 4 psi and it just dumps fuel in after that . Not accurate at all , run for long enough it will eventually give up the ghost .

FWD is not optimal, but in lets say Auto-X where having a FWD car SHOULD be a disadvantage (Tighter Turns)... It turns out that it's not. On a national Level, FWD cars are never far behind the (If not leading) the RWD cars. Being FWD either on a road course or during an Auto-X has NEVER been a disadvantage to me.

The FWD/RWD argument really doesn't come in to play unless your drag racing, or are racing cars on a road course that have TONS of horsepower. But that's just my opinion. Heck, have you been watching the SCCA Word Challenge lately? Seems as if FWD Volvo's have been putting a hurting on the RWD BMW's lately... hmmm.

Whatever...

I don't look at track results anymore. After selling the LGT (regretably), I'm back to driving the FWD '89. Forgot the disadvantages of this method of propelling a vehicle.

Gimme AWD anytime, with RWD a 2nd choice.

Don't like the smell of their exhaust as they blow your ass off the road??

Sorry, SHOs are what they are......and what they are is an an '80s performance car.

A $600 Accessport got me to the 13.40s. An additional $150 for a downpipe would have got the LGT to the high 12s.

What does it cost to get a SHO there??????

400 For the Nitrous Kit, 12 Dollars for the Copper Plugs and the 20 Dollar Entrance fee.
