When you replace the clutch is it mandatory to replace the flywheel?

I am currently getting money together for a clutch job and was wondering if you had to replace the flywheel when you replace the clutch? Thanks

No need to replace it (unless it's been resurfaced too many times already, and is thinner than the allowable spec), just get it resurfaced for $20-30. NAPA usually has a guy in the back that will do it.

It's not recommended to just throw a new clutch in, since the minute grooves in the flywheel (ground by the outgoing clutch) will most likely cause it to not mate properly with the new clutch.

Edit: What he said ^.

Replace, no.

Resurface, yes.

What he said , if the teeth aren't all chewed up on yours , remove take to machine shop . Resurface for 25 $. Reinstall flywheel and DONT FORGET red locktite on the fw bolts.

Alsoid replace all the shifter bushings inside the tranny while you have it off .
www.shosource.com sells the bushings . Good luck .

Red loctite you say? I've always used blue, and I thought that was the consensus around here as well... Any specific reason you recommend red?

If you know you're using the exact same clutch disk material and the flywheel is still flat and the machining is good (i.e., it's not burned and in very clean shape), you may not even need to have it resurfaced. This is fairly rare if the clutch wore out, but it may happen.

If the clutch disk is a different material than what was used before or you're not sure, or if there's any burning (discoloration) or scratches on the flywheel surface, get it blanchard ground (i.e., resurfaced).

Rear main seal. Possibly the axle seals in your trans. Use that word too "Blanchard grind" when you take it to get it resurfaced. :)

I guess I should have used loctite huh... oh well... 20k miles and I haven't spun one out yet.. lol

I always replace one flywheel with two. If one is good, two must be better.

Oh, and the loc-tite? Forget it. Use local honey, it's sooo much sweeter.
