bizzaire tranmission Leak

Hey guys,

I've been having this transmission leak that is outright puzzling.

Usually, its totally fine, does not leak. However, every so often it'll start leaking, POURING, out of what looks like the seal between the transmission and engine. It comes out very very quickly, you can see it just dribble down in a solid line from the bottom of the car.

If I let it sit for several hours and cool down, its fine again. Probably won't do it again for another week or two. I'm pretty puzzled as to what could cause this. If I'd blown the seal between the engine and transmission, it would leak constantly right?

It just seems like something someone would have had before. Thanks for your help, guys.

Mine will do the same thing if I overheat the trans, like power braking the engine or taking it up the mountains here in Colorado. I replaced the fluid with synthetic and put a big ass cooler on it and it hasn't happened again.

Well originally I did look at my coolant, because I thought it might be overheating. Low and behold, I was low.

After that it was fine in the morning, and has been fine up until today when it did it again. This time, however, its not a hemorrhage. Its most assuredly less. Maybe I should just try changing out the fluid. It does have that stock trans cooler, not sure how effective it is in concert with the radiator.

I just experienced the same problem on my Gen 2 however I haven't actually confirmed where the leak came from but i suspected the same spot as you. When I filled it back up it won't leak a drop.

Mine did that awhile ago. It would leak under normal circumstances not just spirited driving. It ended up being the torque converter seal. Replaced it and all is well.

I was thinking it was a torque converter seal. Does that trans have to be pulled completely away from the engine to do that? I'd imagine it might. Any thoughts on doing it myself? If not, how much do you guys think this will cost in parts and labor?

That's exactly what my car did before I had the transmission rebuilt. Still no one could tell me where the leak was coming from. One shop said stator support (?) but never found out for sure...

my experience is that it is the tq seal (sorry). I could drive all day if I didn't spin the thing past 2500 rpm, above that and I would see either a little or a lot of fluid coming out the inspection cover area (the amount depended on how I drove) The engine and tranny need to be split and then you need room to pull/replace the seal.
I managed to limp along with mine (3K miles) by changing the fluid, adding a seal sweller. If the seal is really going out then a few runs up the speed scale will leave you bleeding everywhere. It needs replaced! So, if you need to limp, limp but don't push it too hard...or get it replaced.
