me and my fabricator put the car on his lift and got a good look at things

the funny thing was at one point the exhaust crumples down to 1.65 inches

we are going to order some stainless and go from the 3 bolt flanges down and get rid of everything, probably make an x pipe somewhere

the only thing i'm not sure is what mufflers to go with...

whadya you guys think will sound good

I was looking at different mufflers to get a sound just a bit more than stock. Magnaflo and Bassani both offer mufflers with a 22" plus case in stainless and polished and Flomaster's 50 series are only in an aluminized case. I found this article on X vs. H pipes below while I was surfing. I didn't spend a lot of time, but Magnaflo was the only universal X pipe I found. They're at Jegs, Autoanything, etc. for about $85.

I run Flowmaster 40 Series on my Crown Vic and like them a lot with a V8, but never heard them on a V6 before. I like the sound of Dynomax super Turbo's on my SHO too, but I mainly got them becuase they were bolt on with the cat-back system.

I got the 40s on my '89 with an off road X pipe. It's pretty loud, but that's OK on the 5.0. I'm kinda leery about what muffler to use on a small V6, I don't want that "ricer with a coffee can exhaust tip" sound :laugh_ti:

i've got a single 40 series comin off custom bent 2.5" piping with a stock catless Y, and even without a resonator, it's neither raspy nor ricey sounding. it's actually one of the better sounding V6 SHOs i've heard, and i'm not being biased...oh yeah, did i mention i hate the sound of a V6 SHO?

The stock exhaust has .5kpa of backpressure (none), I found this out after I made mine. The cat back made zero performance gains, maybe .0X but to me that dont count much.

I have two x's now just need time to get one installed. tx PS

IMO, I think your better off leaving the cats for now as a saftey, untill the tuning gets figured out.. Replacing the two pipes from the cats to the cat back I think might yeild the biggest gain at this point.

i'm not going to replace them just for restriction, but also heat, i think those things are probably glowing down there

i'm going to leave all 02 sensors in though, that way the computer still has all the sensors to read from

You should take a ride out! Next weekend a bunch of us are getting together for a swap meet(swamp meet depends on the rain), and maybe a fire.

I also can show you the tuning software and show you somethings about whats really going on with the tunes and how not alot of what is being told is true. I can also show you how pistons get melted.. Via the software.

I won't be able to make it out next weekend. My brother lives in the Hudson Valley, I plan on coming out to see you next time I'm out there.

You're going to waste a bunch of money.... Don't do it. I'm not saying it to be a dick, but its not going to help! I'd rather see you spend money on something worth-while.

I'm not trying to be a dick either but I say do it. I want to see more custom exhausts on this new motor. Somebody has to be at the bleeding edge, er... I meant leading edge. And I know I'm not in a financial position to do all this stretching of the boundaries, so I say go for it.

I would definitely have the headers (inside and the outside) and down pipes Jet-Hot coated to keep that heat contained within the pipes untill it is clear of the engine compartment. I'd also use those slick twist-lock clamp on joints so that it would be easier to try different muffler combinations.

definately going to wrap or coat the front parts at least to where the shield is the protects the exhaust, try to get more of the heat from the engine

On 2nd though, you probably don't need mufflers with the proper resonator on a turbo car. The SRT4's don't have a muffler from the factory even.
