IT'S FINALLY ALIVE!! But........few things

Well, it's done. The PITA front 60K is done and I am THRILLED to have the SHO on the road.

But, of course, there a few things I have noticed.

1. The PS is about shot and I believe is dripping on the rear exhaust (smoke).

2. I had the tranny rebuilt about 3 1/2 years ago but there is only about 20K miles on it. It has a re-inforced diff. It seems to whine quite a bit. What might this be? I think it's done it since the trans was put in.

3. The temp gauge goes to the "N" and then shoots down. I can't remember if this is normal.




And finally, I realize how much I missed my car. It's been 4 years since I was behind the wheel and I forgot what a great car this is.

1. ps pumps aren't fun to replace

2. whining doesn't sound good to me. you may wanna check the trans fluid for metal shavings to make sure you don't have a set of gears that are eating themselves.

3. N still resides in the normal range. it shoots down when the thermostat opens allowing cooler coolant from the rad into the engine. but I think N may be a little high for the t stat to open... although the temp sensor you have may be a touch off as well.

The smoke could be in proper crank seal installation and its dripping on cats

And temp gauge in N I just did front 60k on mine and afterwards mine did the same thing. I put in a new thermostat and problem solved. Stays right by the A and the L

Eh, I think the crank seal is fine (used PVC pipe and everything). The smoke is coming from the back of the motor. Plus, my brother just told me it was doing it before he laid it up.

The whine, I was told by a tech here at the store, is normal. IDK, I still want some SHO owners opinions.

Do some investigation to isolate the leak to the PS pump, PS hose, or rear cam seal. The rear cam seal has a tendency to leak, can unfortunately take multiple attempts at replacement to get it leak free.

If you have to change the PS pump, check my past posts for a procedure that made it tolerable for me.

For the temperature issue, I suggest you replace the thermostat with an Autozone Duralast 15878 thermostat, and a Motorcraft RS-90 radiator cap. This combination gives a very stable temperature on my car.

Another thing:

I've been reading up on trans fluids. When the trans was changed out in my car, I don't know what fluid was put in. If my level is low, what should I put in?? The tech that worked on it was a 20yr Ford vet so I know he knew what he was doing.

Also, can I drain the trans without removing that one bolt that if you move the car, everything's screwed?

Are you sure that the front main wasnt leaking into the Cat before? IT will smoke for a while if it had leaked onto the cat.

The trans whine is kind of normal, I just get used to it.

Remove radiator cap, let it run till the t-stat opens, top off and see if it still has the issue, sounds like an air pocket to me.

I'm thinking it might have been oil on the CAT now. The smoke seems to have slowed down and I know that seal was SHOT!!

I'm having the trans fluid changed tomorrow. $80+Fluid. What kind should I go with?

You might be right about the air pocket. I'll look into it. Aswell as the sending unit (where is it?).

Castrol or Valvoline ATF seem to be good bets. Without drilling a new drain, you either have to remove that bolt or suck the old fluid out from the fill hole.

The temp issue sounds like air in the system. A new Motorcraft Tstat and rad cap are good ideas if they're old and you're messing with the coolant anyway.

I would install a MTX drain plug and do the trans fluid yourself. It's an easy job. There is a diagram somewhere that shows where to drill. Basically you drill the case, tap it and install a 1/4 NPT plug. As far as the fluid...I have had luck with Valvoline max life....though it seems to vary from car to car. I would hate to see you spend $80+ and have the fliud not be to the liking of the trans. Just my 2 cents

Yeah, I get what you're saying but the mechanic I'm having do it is VERY good and works on a lot of rare autos. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I trust this guy with my SHO.




UPDATE: I just got the title and tag transfered and brought it back to work:woo-hoo: I filled the radiator the rest of the way and she doesn't go higher than half way on the temp gauge. Also, the whining isn't as loud as I thought. I can't hardly hear it unless it echos off of something. I'm pushing the fluid change back to next tuesday due to lack of funds. I've spent WAY more than I planned, but it's been worth it.

Mine rarely ever touches the "A", usually stays around the"L"..
Sounds like you need to "burp" your radiator..

A lot of people come here to socialize, but I haven't ever forgotten the invaluable help, in both advice and parts, that I've received from members over the years, and I try to repay it any time I can. I found that crank pulley on a junkyard car (it was laying loose!) and I took it, figuring that if I didn't need it some day, then somebody else might. I'm glad I decided to pay the $15 that I did for it, because you can't really put a price on a crisis averted. I only wish I had a key as well. Oh well, maybe next time...

Dude, you were a LIFE SAVER with that spocket! I don't know WTH I would have done without it.

As for the people here, everybody is awesome. For whatever reason, I and a lot of other people have a love and passion for this car and THAT is what will keep them alive. I'm so proud to have this car back and running right. I got my first compliment on it today while getting gas!
