So, I took apart the 3.2L to check up on an oil burning issue. I found 12 of 12 leaking exhaust valve stem seals, and while the rings looked ok, I found a problem with the #1 cylinder:

P1010010

If I run my finger up and down, I can feel a profile. Is this fixable, or am I completely [screwed] and going to need a new 3.2L block?

I'd hit it with a hone and see if it removes the profile. Then (if you can) measure the bore to see if its still in spec. I'd have to lean towards a stuck ring by lookin at that spot on the wall :(

Edit: I see you already tore it apart Doh!

Haha yeah it's already in pieces, the block is strapped down in the back of the Cherokee.

I've been running it for almost the past 3 years now and only recently took it off the road. Before that, it sat for a while in a storage shed before I bought it, however during my initial inspection, there was no hesitation when I cranked it by hand.

Just heard back from the machine shop. He said the honing cleaned up 99% of it. Looks like this engine will live out the rest of it's days as a 3.2L. :)

I'll have pics when I get it back from the machine shop later today.

Like I said, more faith than me. With how cheap and easy you can get a block, it's not something I would do without completely boring it out.

I know of at least 2 SHO engines that looked like that. Both are still running to this day.

I still find it hard to believe that a hone (and a hone only) is aggressive enough to remove visible ridges. I would have thought you'd need to cut at least 20 thou...

Guess there's hope for more heavily damaged blocks than I thoght.

I'd love to see before and after compression ring end gap numbers.

The last one I measured was just in spec, as far as ring end gap.
