I took my SHO to another muffler shop and had them take a looked at my hacked up true dual system. I told the guy I wanted to go back to stock and he said the Y would be pretty expensive. I told him I could get one used from someone on here, but then he said they won't install used parts. He looked at it further and told me that the source of my noise was the raggedy mufflers I had on the car; apparently they were leaking. He said he could put some quiet mufflers on there with turn down tips to see how it worked. If I didn't like it, he said I could still go through with my original plan but wouldn't be out any money since I could re-use the new mufflers. For $120 I told him go ahead.

I got the car back and the turn down tips look MUCH better than what I had (just muffler ends blowing out toward the bumper). It quieted the car down somewhat but not alot. I'm still getting a rattling sound when I get up on the car hard. I think something is vibrating around the exhaust manifold area. It's not totally what I wanted but will be a temp fix until I decide if I want to do more later. I just wanted to get it a little better and get rid of the mufflers that kept breaking loose from the hangers.

My next project is the valve sounding noise/top 60k. Oh yeah, got my driver power window motor replaced the same day too. Royal PITA--had to run by our mechanic friend's shop because I couldn't drill out the rivets and my rivet gun was too small. He had to air drill the existing ones out and use a large gun he had to reinstall the new ones. I haven't messed w/ the passenger side yet since it's not as important. My driver side power door lock is also fixed (just a free j/y switch did the trick).

I'm slowly starting to make progress in putting some time and $ into this thing. The big excitement will be the paint job.

I may get some additional work done to the exhaust later on but it did need new mufflers, so I just got that done for now and will move on to the more important stuff that needs to be done.

We have a local guy here that works out of his backyard shop. He does paint and body work. I've seen his work and it's far better than any of the larger body shops here. The guy is a one man show and takes pride in his work, takes his time, and is very meticulous. He's going to repaint it in the original Lt. Titanium. Right now it's more of a dull silvery gray. I have pics on the Silver SHO sticky. One of the previous owners took it to Maaco and ruined it. He quoted me $1200 for a repaint, including all materials and high quality PPG paint.

Thats a great deal on a paint job. Wish I could find someone around here that did cheap quality work. Can't wait to see it when it's done!

sounds like you have SHO rasp. get a long resonator.

I'm going to go outside later and take a video of it and post it up on YouTube for everyone to hear and see what they think. I'll just set the camera on the ground and start/rev the car up so everyone will know what I'm talking about.

So you actually had true duals? That is what I was thinking about doing to mine this summer or fall. How did they fit and were there any clearance issues for them making there way to the back? What size pipe were you using? Sorry for the 20 ?'s.

Here's a quick video of the sound. Man it's still loud. I also noticed a little smoke coming from the back upon startup. It was a cold start and has been chilly (about 50 out) and rainy. Not sure if that's the reason of the little smoke on startup. I hope I don't need major engine work. I never noticed the car smoking any before except when using seafoam. When it's sunny outside I'll take one of the underside to get a view of the setup. I tried tonight but it was too dark. I have no idea what size pipes are on it. I bought the car like this minus the new mufflers. Any way to quiet this beast down?

:cuss: Great, now what...valve stem seals are bad? This car doesn't have 70k on it then; probably 170k. I just noticed this; the car never really smokes otherwise from what I could tell. It definitely doesn't do it when warmed up or when idling. I just got a $9200 bonus at work and I'm ready to just pitch this one and start over. Toolman has a nice Gen II MTX for $3k that needs nothing.

It's got cats but I guess that's about it. I told you guys it sounded like shit. I don't like drawing attention to myself in traffic like that. Short of ripping the whole damn thing out and starting over totally stock, I don't know what else to do to quiet it down.

I'm afraid mine will be too loud with the Y-Pipe From SHO Source when I get it. Maybe thats why I'm procrastinating on buying it.

I took the SHO back to the exhaust shop this past weekend to see what could be done about the rasp. This time, I took it to a different location (same shop owner). Because my car has true duals, there is no room for a resonator. They told me the only thing I could do is get them to possibly build me a Y and re-do the entire thing, or pretty much go buy a new Y-pipe and start all over with everything else except the new mufflers I purchased.

This is going to cost a $**t ton of $, and I don't think they install used parts, so If I bought a Y from a forum member, I'd have to find another shop to do it.

All I want is my exhaust quieted down. I'd prefer to go back to stock but at the price it's going to cost, just quieting the existing system would be fine since the new mufflers/tips actually look good. I'd planned to throw most of my $ at engine maintenance and it looks like it'll cost over $500 to redo the exhaust. Even if I got a catback system, I'd still have to have the Y pipe.

Is there any way to cheaply do this? That's a lot of money just to make my exhaust quiet.

Oh and the J/Y that I found the 93 MTX in had some ok exhaust components but was missing the most important part I need---the Y pipe.

hmm, you got any pics of the undercarriage? The guy who had my SHO before me removed the resonator, I'm thinking to put in a temp CAT to try and pass emissions, cuz it really looked hacked. I still have no resonator now, just two Thrush straight glass packs like this (painted black)....
41QDAX57AQL SL500 AA280

I don't have nearly that rasp until I hit 4K.
I'm at work and I literally started laughing when I heard that. I thought I have rasp problems. :)
The reason I ask for picks of the undercarriage, it cuz I kinda wanna see how the true dual was ran. Also, I'm not sure about this, maybe others know better, but I think the type of metal tubing may effect it too.

No it's not stock at all.....not one part of it. The PO had one pipe for each exhaust manifold. There's no Y on this car (which is an expensive as **** part). I'll take some pics this afternoon and post them up so everyone will know what I'm working with. I initially went in and told them to throw on a resonator to quiet it down. The problem is that with it being a true dual exhaust, the 2 exhaust pipes that come from the exhaust manifolds run side by side all the way to the back of the car where they split off. This leaves 0 room for anything. Plus I have the rod shifter (not that it matters much) so that's one more thing that has to be worked around.

This sucks because it'll be at least $500 to fix the damn thing just to get it quiet.

well when i said stock system i was talking to Vnuk1 since he was wondering if his was gonna be like that

sorry for the confusion, and the situation ur in sucks since all you want to do is make it quite

just by the Ypipe and get a single exhaust done, only way i think would fix it,

Yeah I priced out everything using the Walker online catalog. This place had everything in stock except the resonator, which is about $65. The grand total for the parts alone (not including new mufflers/tips which I already have) is around $500, not including the cost for installation.
